So, I just received this Compaq evo n600c that I got from e-bay...everything seems okay...except that i threw in a dvd into the player and no sound comes out. I checked everything that I could think of and and all of the sound is on on the computer. I emailed the seller and they said that the speakers were working when they received it....so I have no idea what else I could do. I think the speakers are ESS allegro speakers....any advice would be great! Thanks again!

Do you know if you have onboad or a pci card being used for sound there? If the wav files assigned to Windows functions are heard then you may have to reinstall the media player being used or go with an alternate.

um...I am not sure which I have, is there a way I can find out? I also can't hear any sound when I play a dvd, and all of the volume on the sound is all the way up. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with my soundcard? I'm not very computer savvy.

Its on board. Have you checked if it' on mute? Sorry, I have to ask. Do you hear anything at all such as a Windows startup chime? Also have you tried the headphone port? If it works through that, it's definitely the speakers.

The latest drivers if you need to install it is here.

ok, well...I tried headphones and sound is only coming out of one side. These are pretty new headphones, so I know it's not them. I also installed the audio drivers again and still have no sound from the speakers. If the problem is the speakers, do you think that there is a way to get my money back from whoever sold it, since the product is defective? Would it be worth it to replace the speakers? I guess that's what I get for buying a laptop off of e-bay:mad:

No, it definitely won't. As for getting a refund, you can try reading through the auction posting and see if he gauranteed all the parts working or not. You can also chat with an Ebay rep to see what you can do. And if you are stuck with this, they do make PC card sound cards and USB sound cards that you can use, but of course, thats more money out of your pocket. :(

hm...I suppose that's an option....live and learn I suppose :( Well, this is strange...I noticed when I put the earphone jack halfway in the computer...the speakers work, and if I insert it all the way in, sound comes through one side of my headphones so I move the jack around and I get sound out of both earphones for a minute. so, maybe there's a short in a wire connection somewhere in the computer? Should I try to take it to someone maybe and see if I can fix the problem because it seems the speakers do work, if I put the headphone jack halfway in...I'm just trying every solution before I complain to the seller. Thanks so much for your help :)

Sure signs of a messed up jack. Not worth fixing unless you can do it yourself. The laptop may not be worth putting even more money into. But of course, it's up to you.

EDIT: Did you say the now speakers work?!

Well, when I put the headphones in the jack. I took them out halfway and noticed the speakers flickered on while in that position. I don't know what the earphone jack has to do with the connection to the speakers, but...it sounds like a pain. I haven't expereienced this problem with any other computer

You could easily get a replacement 1/8" mini-plug jack at a place like Radio Shack. But the problem you would probably is knowing how to get the casing open without damaging anything else just to solder the new one in. You don't want to ruin anything else in the process since the audio jacks are located on the side of the keyboard section itself. Here's a look at some angles of the unit illustrated at http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...4&Sku=J156-3278&SRCCODE=NEXTAG&CMP=EMC-NEXTAG
