No standby option when I shut down XP
Q. When I purchased my Dell laptop, it came preloaded with Windows XP. When I wanted to shut down the system I had three choices: Turn Off, Restart or Standby. I had problems and had to reload Windows XP. Now when I want to shut the system down I only get two choices: Turn Off or Restart. Is there a way I can get the Standby option back?

A. There are a few things I can suggest. The first is to make sure that Advanced Power Management is enabled in the operating system.

In Control Panel, double-click Power Options and look for an APM tab. In this section, you want to make sure Enable Advanced Power Management Support is selected.

If this option is not available or you are still having troubles you may need to go to the Dell Support Site and download all the current drivers for your system, including video, sound card and network device drivers.

Since you had to reload Windows XP, it's possible that Windows installed some basic drivers for your hardware devices and this might be causing problems with the Standby mode functionality.
