I recently built myself a new computer - and it's loud. I know the bulk of the noise is from an 80 mm cooling fan in the back. It's also due to an aluminum case. It's not "dying" noisy, it's just a loud machine noise. Anyone have any ideas on how to reduce the noise (besides the obvious "fix/get-rid-of the fan")? I've seen sound dampening foam for sale on the internet for this reason, but it's like $30 for a small roll. Anyone used this stuff and/or found it cheaper than $30?

You can always buy a fan controller, e.g. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811998129. It allows you to adjust the speed of the fan, and hence reduce the noise.
