Noisy HDD, I need a solution!

I tried, apparently it wasn't designed with Vista in mind..

EDIT: I just realized I downloaded Lifeguard Utilities, I'm going to run Lifeguard Diagnostics now =) (which IS compatible with Vista)

Right, but you're describing a hum... where-as I'm describing a loud hum that sounds like a quiet jet engine, so to speak... more of a hmmbbbzzzhmmmbbzzhhmmbzzz, forgive the poor example ;)

I have two WD drives in my case, 1x 160GB which is silent.. and the 60GB which is very loud.

Yup. I know the sound, and that's actually a pretty good imitation of it! My old Quantum made sounds like that. I got it used and then used it myself for three years every day. I really don't think you have a problem. Just make sure all the mounting screws are tight, as well as any mounting rails or drive cage screws.

I appreciate the comments, and advice.. but the problem isn't whether or not it's defective, it's how I get it to either shutup, or what I can stick around it to make it quieter :D

I'm currently looking at external USB 2.0 enclosures, but I wonder if I need one with a fan or not? Would an aluminum enclosure be fine?

I think an aluminum enclosure would restrict most of the sound this thing gives off, especially since the sound holds such a high tone, I don't think it could penetrate the metal :)

I actually have some acoustic foam pads lying around that I tried last night which seemed to get rid of most of the noise, and I believe it's fire retardant, but I'm afraid sticking an acoustic foam covered HDD in my PC could be bad.. that one case you linked to, the $20 one, looks promising.. but I only have 2x 5.25" bays and both are occupied.
