Noisy PSU.. Quick fix?

So one of my computers has a very noisy PSU (at times) but the unit itself doesn't heat up and I can see the fan spinning.. I opened it up and figured out I can't remove the PSU (Weird) but I wouldn't of bought a new one anyway.
Is there a way that I can make it quiet by slowing down the fan or anything.. I just don't want to buy a new PSU because the computer is basically worth the value of a PSU.

Noisey fans in otherwise good supplies is always a royal pain! Simply trying to go out and buy just any fan to replace it with generally isn't advised.

You would likely to order a replacement from the manufacturer to get one that was quiet and properly fit inside. Otherwise you would have to jerry rig the mounting to see another same sized fan go in to quiet things down.

Is this on an older prebuilt system? Or was it simply a build where the supply was already included with the case itself? With prebuilds and cases that come with supplies already in them always expect the lowest quality and no surprise at hearing about a noisey fan unfortunately. The supplies are simply put... "CHEAP"! garbage.

The only thing that might help there may be adding in a shim if the original mounting is loose like say the fan was riveted inplace and not seeing threaded fasteners. With the mounting loose the fan is vibrating. Otherwise you may end having to live with the noise until finally dumping the system or it wears out.

The computer is an older pre-built one.. The fan actually makes me want to blow it up into 1,000,000 pieces. It annoys me so much because I actually really need this computer, although I have others this one holds all my music, iTunes and Limewire which I really don't feel like installing on another computer. The computer is an hp pavillion 7840 if that helps. I've tried looking for a PSU to replace it with but spending $30+ on a tight budget plus the computer probably isn't worth that much doesnt seem like a good choice.

Have fun searching EBay while they still have auctions! The HP page on that line of boat anchors can be read at http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2001/010108a.html

Being that old the fan is worn and now simply loud. You would likely have to bid on an entire used system just to grab another supply and still likely end up with another one seeing a loud fan.

That takes the non atx older type of 170w+ type there while a more recent system could see a fast replacement with just about any low priced atx supply just to keep it running. The fan is likely bound up with dust and dirt as well as seeing the wear from age there.
