Non-computer fan?

My friend took off one of his side panels of his computer and set up a regular fan to blow air into the parts if his PC. I thought that it was a good idea, because it could probably blow more air than any computer 120mm or 80mm fan could. Was I right in saying this is a good idea or is it somehow harmful to the computer?? Is there any bad effect from doing this?

with the side panel off, there will be a lot more dust getting into the system. it should be ok with regular cleaning.

I posted about the same exact thing not to long ago. Many people that OC often do this so they can get lower temps.

Dust can be a problem as someone else mentioned.

What you want to watch out for, is magnets in the fan. Most standard room fans use a magnetic motor to power the fn blades, these magnets are very large and have a very large "field" if you will. Setting it too close to the internals ofthe coputer can be damaging. Also, the air that passes throug hthe magnetic fan can be slightly "charged" and upon long xposure to this air, the CPU internals can be damaged. Make sure you have a magnetically shielded fan, and you should be fine. Otherwise, I suggest not using this method for cooling.
