i have a compaq sr1130nx tower. if i wanted to replace the board/chip, could i still use the case? I never really thought of this until a minute ago. Will it fit? Is a generic case any different? Thanks!

If the new board fits inside the case and all your components are compatible with it, then no problem, you can replace it and get the new one.

I dont know how Compaq does things but two things can change:
1. The physical size of the board
2. The locations of the screwholes
With non-oem cases and boards, you dont have to worry about either as they tend to use standard dimension specifications
