noob needs help

new to the site, and not very educated when it comes to the latest in computers, hoping some of you might be willing to help.

i currently have a p4 3.0 that i bought from dell a few years back, speed is still great, i will be using this computer as a storage server for all of my vids, pics, and music. this computer will be on my network and will allow me to play the music through my housewide audio system and video/pics in my theater room. i will use the 52" lcd as the monitor for the computer.

i need to get a 2nd computer, i want speed, blazing speed, i can keep this computer clean by placing all music, vids, pics, and other files on the other comp. i would use this computer to surf the net, download music, vids, and pics. i will have antivirus software running, and i also use multiple programs, or have multiple windows open at the same time. i believe i would greatly benefit from a duo or quad processor.

i will probably want to use 2 monitors, a 32" lcd and a regular 17" lcd.

SPEED, SPEED, AND MORE SPEED, dont need fancy cases, or crazy vid cards, or enormous storage, just fast as possible, and i would consider overclocking if beneficial. currently on the dell site shopping around, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. not opposed to spending upwards of 3k if it would be worth it. thank you guys for the help!

Welcome to CF, Looks like your after a prebuild i`m guessing anyway.

Most certainly you`ll be looking for a dual/quad core CPU and probably a good amount of RAM.

If your going to get a PC from Dell then you might want to have a look at the Inspiron and the XPS series of desktop PCs.

CPU wise, I would get a Intel Core 2 Duo.

had a friend build one for me in the past, but i think i am better off buying a prebuilt one without some expertise. dont have to buy a dell, any better options to purchase a prebuilt with my needs? i always end up paying for things i do not need like better vid cards, software, etc.

was actually looking into the precision desktops, seems like the xps are geared for gaming and the inspiron is more of an affordable pc,
am i wrong on this?
would i benefit from a quad over a duo?
would the quad be faster, even if i was doing simple tasks?
what are the current fastest quad and duo processors?
will too much ram slow down my computer, or is that just the hd?
beneficial to overclock and maybe have a cooling system?

thank you for helping my noobness

which one is better?
Have a read m8, you`ll find the Core 2 Duo`s are alot better than the Pentium CPUs.

No your not wrong, that seems correct. Im from the UK and to be honest I wouldnt know where the best places to buy stuff from in your area is. But me and other forum members can give you a good idea what to look for.

If your a mega multitasker then yeah definitely.

would the quad be faster, even if i was doing simple tasks?
Nope.
what are the current fastest quad and duo processors?
At the min for dual cores it would be the Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800.
And for quad cores it will be the Intel Core2Quad Extreme QX6800.

Both of them are very top of the range CPUs available to buy at the min.

will too much ram slow down my computer, or is that just the hd?
I wounldnt have thought so if your using a x64 OS (might need a second opinion on that).

The new intel CPUs run cool anyway and you would be able to get a good overclock on normal air cooled heat sinks.
As for overclocking yeah you should see good preformance gains by doing so.

Yes you will need an 64 bit OS unless your only getting 3.25GB or so. It depends on how much you are overclocking. Remeber that overclocking processors will increase heat, so you might want to invest a few bucks into an better heatsink + fan, case fans, thermal compound.
