Noob question but can't find answer

Hey guys thanks for reading...

I am trying to install my old hard drive into my new PC.

The new motherboard has only SATA connections, while my old hard drive was IDE/PATA...so I bought a 2 dollar adapter which I connected to the old drive and connected the SATA cable to it, then to the motherboard.

I have the 4 pin power connector going into the old drive like it is supposed to, but there is also a 4 pin connector that attaches to the adapter itself it seems.

I have tried to get my computer to detect this drive but it doesn't show it at all. Not in the BIOS or anywhere that I can see.

I did not reformat the drive prior to connecting it, is that the problem?

How can I get my computer to detect this drive?

I can't find any "Auto-Detect" functions in my BIOS...

my motherboard is a Gigabyte Z68 AP-D3

hard drive is a Barracuda 250gb that I want to use as a data drive for my recording sessions, to store audio only on.

I was going to reformat it with my new computer if it would only show up...
 
Note: I do not want a BOOT drive, I already have my OS and stuff on a drive connected to this computer. I want a data drive
 
Some of those IDE to sata adapters don't work. Which adapter did you get? Can you post a link to it? If not, give me the model number of it.
 
you know what would be better than a ide/sata adapter, a external harddrive case that will hold your ide harddrive and it would plug into a usb port

I have gone down the USB Hard Drive route before.

I am trying to record up to 24 tracks of audio simultaneously @ 24bit 48Khz.

Despite knowing the supposed rate at which USB data flows, it does it in bursts, and it is not really dependable for recording sessions in my opinion.

I want to simply use an internal drive instead, because it will be much faster and more dependable.. also, I already had a drive from my old computer.

The adapter was about 2 bucks off ebay.

It is this exact one I am pretty sure.

ALSO I am really unclear as to where the jumper position needs to be, as HP did not give me any kind of manual for the hard drive. Every guide online just says, "RTFM"
 
As you can see in the pics, the adapter has a supplementary power adapter thing. I am unclear as to if I need this plugged in or not, because the hard drive already has a 4 pin from my power supply in it.

I've tried it both ways and it won't show up in the BIOS either way.


I think the problem is either my jumper pin thing is in the wrong place, or the adapter doesn't work as intended...or I dont have a clue what i'm doing in the BIOS.....or it can't be done with an already-used-hard drive that has an OS and all that on it...
