Noob question- Is this cpu compatible with my motherboard?

Hello

Ok I'll be honest, I don't know a lot about computers but I love messing around with them. Just started programming in collage and find it really interesting.

Anyhow my questions is, will an intel pentium 4 processor @ 3.2Ghz with 1024 cache fit my dell inspiron 1525 laptop motherboard which has an "intel pentium dual cpu T2390 @1.86 Ghz".

I saw a cheap cpu on ebay but don't really know if it will fit as I know that there is a range of different sockets. Think the pentium 4 is a mPGA478B socket. Correct me if I'm wrong? Not too sure what the current cpu's socket is.

Thanks so much in advance :)

these are the compatible cpus

Intel Celeron 540, 550 or 560, Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2370, T2390, or T2330, or Intel Core 2 Duo T5250, T5450, T5550, T5750, T7250 or T8100

but replacing a lappy cpu is difficult, and also there is a good amount of risk if you are inexperienced too.

If they were interchangeable I can almost guarantee heating problems.

THIS A MILLION TIMES
That CPU is a desktop one i'm pretty sure, so putting it in a laptop is a bad move. You'd have 0 battery life and chronic overheating.

That's if it even fits.

Desktop and laptop processors are not interchangeable. 1: They're different sockets and 2: Desktop CPU's are much larger than laptop CPU's.

If you're looking to upgrade the CPU you're better off either getting a new laptop or replacing the current CPU with a Core2Duo.

Wouldn't change it myself I'd get a computer repair shop to do that for me. Can't afford a new laptop I'm a collage studen't ha. Just want to make my laptop a bit quicker and compatable with some software I need for collage. Ram is pretty good and there was a new hard drive put in last year. Didn't know it was a desktop cpu, don't know a lot about computers as I said.

would a
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T9900
be any good to me?

if it's not on the list then generally it isn't going to work on he motherboard, the mobo is only programmed with the info to use certain cpus, and going by that, using that cpu just won't work, i think sometimes it will work but just not know what the name is or something, but it is best to just go with a supported cpu

am i missing something or is the op looking to replace one of the new dual core pentiums with an old single core P4 meaning that regardless of heat or compatibility isuues, would be quite a big down grade.

Apart from that it is not compatible, had to brush up on my history here so correct me if I am wrong, the mobo you have is socket P whereas the P4 socket is socket 478, although both have 478 pins they are not electrically compatible.

Also according to this:

http://www.cpu-world.com/Sockets/Socket 478 (mPGA478B).html

Socket 478 was the same for both desktop and mobile p4, celeron etc.
