First off I'd like to state that I am basically a computer noob so any help you give has to be step by step.

Well when I got home today the first thing I noticed on my computer was that my desktop had been changed to a huge bio-chemical sign saying that my computer was in extreme danger and 30+ internet explorer pop-ups that I used task manager to get rid of. (I use Firefox) My McAfee is going crazy with virus messages and my computer is slow as hell. I keep getting fake system pop-up windows and autospawn pop-ups pretending to be XP security warnings. While getting rid of pop-ups I accidentally click on my fake desktop background which happens to be a link causing more pop-ups.

So far I've scanned my computer with Ad-Aware SE, Spybot S&D, and SuperAntiSpyware in normal and in Safe Mode and it only helped temporarily. Now this morning it's right back to where started.

Thanks any specific help is appreciated! I don't know how to do any reg stuff so if it's needed just give steps.

This sounds like a Smitfraud infection.

Please download the HijackThis installer from http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe.

Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

When the Notepad window opens choose Edit -> Select All to select the entire log, and copy and paste the log into a reply post.
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

I had the exact same thing a month ago or so and the only thing that i could find that would get rid of it was SmitFraudFix, AVG and ad-aware didnt find it. Do the scan and fix in safe mode

Smitfraudfix will be required, but please post your HijackThis log first - depending on what other infections are showing it may be necessary to run other programs first. Once I have the HijackThis log I will be able to provide you with steps for a fix.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot to Safe Mode (tap F8 just before Windows starts to load and select Safe Mode from the list).

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter to delete infected files.

You will be prompted :

Registry cleaning - "Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer Yes by typing Y and press Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer Yes by typing Y and press Enter.

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Once done, please run HijackThis and choose Do a System Scan Only.

Place a check next to whichever of the following entries remain:

Arg!

It appears that the problem is blocking SmitFraudFix from being downloaded. When downloading from Firefox it says unknown error and when downloading it from IE it gets to 99% then says that access is denied. I've tried 4 alternate download locations and it's always the same.

EDIT: It was just McAfee. I'm temporarily disabling it to download SmitfraudFix.

OK, looks like the file association for .com files has been broken. Please download COM File Association Fix. Inside the ZIP file is a .reg file. Double click on it. When asked whether you wish to merge the information with the registry, answer Yes.

Once done, restart into Safe Mode and try my instructions in the previous post again.

If that fails to work, open up notepad and copy in the contents of the code box below:
Code:
smitfraudfix.cmd
From the File menu, select Save. Change the Save As Type to All files, and save the file as Smitfraudfix.bat in the same folder you've extracted Smitfraud fix to. Then follow my instructions in the previous post running Smitfraudfix.bat instead of Smitfraudfix.cmd

Excellent, your logfile now appears to be clear of infections. Are you still having any problems?

I'm glad the bat file option worked, however it would still be beneficial to reset your file associations in case you need to run cmd files in future. To do so, download reset associations.zip.
  • Double click on the zip file you just saved to open it
  • Double click on the reset associations folder inside it
  • Double click on the reset associations (XP only) folder inside that
  • Double click on the reg version folder
  • Double click on the separate folder
  • Double click on cmd.reg and answer Yes when asked if you would like to merge the information with the registry.

This should allow you to run .cmd files in the future.

Thank you very much it appears I'm all good. I rarely get good help these days. I'm never asking Newgrounds for help since all they do is tell you to delete your system32 and rub a magnet against your HD.

I'll reset my file associations.
