northbridge fan not running

I have an Abit NF7-S (yes i know, known for its problems). I've had it about 2 years and it ran fine but lately the northbridge fan has not been running at all...how important is this fan for keeping the chipset cool? The computer reboots on its own often, could this be why?

Thanks,
Nick

where can I find a fan with this type of attachment? should i get one with a heatsink too?

thanks.

There's a possibility the fan header on the motherboard has stopped working. Use a multimeter and test the pins for 12v.

I don't think it is that because if you tap the fan or spray it with air it will run for a little while...at a low speed, however.

Is that a 40mm fan? You could probably get a normal fan and attach it with the screws on that one. If it deosn't have a 2 pin header like that one you can power it off a molex. You'll have to measure it all out forst to make sure the mounts on the top and bottom of the heatsink wont get in the way

Those fans are absolutely INFAMOUS for siezing. I hate active northbridge cooling. That's what totally blows about AMD mobos. They have to have that cooling as well, or the mobo develops real issues.

You might look to Vantec for a solution.

Just as SirKenin said, you can find lots of problems relating to these style fans. I know Asus has a bad set of them on their motherboards for a while. There are many other solutions. Check on newegg, you could even just get a little heatsync to fit on there.

If you could do that believe me, mobo manufacturers would. Unfortunately with those chipsets they need the active cooling.

Ya asus is attempting to get them to run on passive cooling, but they run pretty toasty, I know mine does on my ASUS A8n-sli premium.
