Northbridges and video cards

Just was wondering I am a bit confused on a motherboard lets say the northbridge is a intel such as a gforce 9100m does that also mean that you would have to purchase a nvidia graphics card? I know some say they support both ati and amd, however this is problably a stupid question but id rather know before wasting cash.
 
anyone know? basically what im asking is if the integrated card on the mobo is an ati do i also have to purchase a video card that is an ati, as long as it doesnt say that it supports both.
 
the only time you need to meet a requirement is when you are doing an sli or crossfire setup. i think for just a single card it doesn't matter if the chipset is nvidia or ati. if you plan on doing either down the road it would be a good idea to get a mobo that supports the desired one (or both).
