Norton Anti-Virus and BSOD

I was helping a friend with some computer problems and they said as soon as they installed norton 2007 they had trouble shutting down their computer and would recieve a system crash blue screen of death after shutting down the computer.

Any ideas on what this could be?

I've already tried uninstalling norton but it seems like it has damaged some system files.

I've run SFC (system file check) with the repair option and still no luck.

Also downloaded the most recent windows updates and installed AVG Free to scan for other viruses.

The system restore feature would have been the first thing after uninstalling Norton there. Is that the "sfc /sscannow" command mentioned there? It sounds like it may be about time for a repair install. But the next step is to locate and remove any registry keys lingering for Norton. One freeware shows all programs installed except MS in it's main winodow.

RegCleaner creates a desktop icon only and allows removal in the main windows along with an automatic registry cleanup tool and the option to open the regedit. http://www.sofotex.com/downloads/d4965.html

If nothing is left or cleaning further forces a repair install review the good article for this at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

The removal tool will go as far as removing drivers, software, and some folders while still leaving some installation logs behind created by Windows most likely. If the removal tool still fails when tried and a system restore to an earlier date doesn't provide any good results the last option is a repair install of Windows itself. Norton is known for being intrusive and you probably saw a bad install originally. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Ok I tried running the nortan removal tool but it didn't seem to fix anything. And yeah the sfc /scannow is the thing i ran earlier.

System restore is no good because it doesn't go back far enough to before Norton was installed.

We are probably just gonna leave it how it is. I don't think it's worth the time to fix because the computer functions fine other than that one issue.

It's also running sooo much faster without norton installed.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

The key now would be looking for any remaining registry values lingering aas well as any remaining folders on the drive. The repair install option can bail you out of tuff situations however. Keep the link there as a good reference. Aren't you glad to see a faster running system without Norton gone? almost. It's a known fact that Norton is a resource hog! Try AVG it works well.
