i used to use drive image when everything is done in dos so the boot drive is not in use when i do a backup and vice versa. now norton ghost didnt really say you cant do a backup of the boot drive in windows i did a backup in windows the thing is how did they do it without the file in use since the boot drive is using most of the system files how is the program copying all the files needed for backup?

Ghost seems to read it's entire program into memory (more or less) on boot up.

The normal Ghost program suite within Windows isn't what's doing the backup when dealing with the system drive it hands over the a DOS based equivalent by rebooting. It can then read whatever files it needs to.
