Norton product question

Hey, I 've been a Norton user for quite some time and I am wondering If I get the AntiVirus, Internet Security, and SystemWorks all together, will take up a crap load of resources? And are any of these any good?

If you had done any searching, you will see that norton has had an effect on many computers as far as slowing them down because of the resourses it uses. And having read many recent tests of detection rates, Norton is not at the top.The 3 best detection ratings belong to Kaspersky,F-secure and BitDefender. And all of these offer stand alone antivirus, or complete security suites.I am not saying your computer will become infected if you use norton.I'm just stating that your chances will decrease if you use one of the 3 i mentioned. And i haven't come across complaints about their resourses use.

Yes its true that norton uses up a good amount of ram, but it is a very good program with updates that come out almost daily. It also has the best GUI that i've seen and is one of the easiest to work with.

I would get the whole suit, it is what I used. It takes up alot fo rescourses compared to otehrs, but its not really that much, its a great ainitvirus.

Norton's average responce time to a new virus averages 10-12 hours.KAV is 0-2 hours and F-secure, 2-4.In a thourough testing done this month, one test involved using 1 month old definitions which simulates what happens when a new virus appears and companies include it in their definition update to protect your computer.KAV and F-secure scored near the top with detection rates of 55%.Norton's was only 22%.That's less than half and they take much longer to update their definitions.

thats probably an opinion or something you looked up a while ago. or from one source. things like that change occasionally for new programs are always coming out. other says norton is top 3, others dont.. depends on where and when u look.

since u been with norton for quite some time already... had any problems? slow downs? anything.. if not.. its probably doing you good and an upgrade to the packages isn't a bad thing. norton was one of the first virus protection utilities that came out that everyone knew of so thats why people are still using it now. i'd say it'll be good for u to go for internet security suite.

I have downloaded things of off limewire, and nortan gives me a popup for it within secondss of the file download being complete.

Edifier prabally works for them lol.

People.I'm not trying to upset anyone or put down norton. And if you read what i wrote, you will see that.Norton is popular because when these bad viruses started really coming on a few years back, they were the best. They're not now.If you go and read what i mentioned in my first reply, there are 4 different testings you can look at.Oct/04, Oct/05/Dec/05,Jan/06.From 4 different sources, and the 2 most recent ones were very intensive and completely unbiased. If you say to yourself, "i'm going to look at these 4 tests and make an unbiased opinion after", i guarentee you will say that the testing was fair and norton has been passed by a few others as the best on the market right now.And all i said was that using KAV,F-secure, would give you a better chance of not getting infected. And that is because right now, they have the best detection rates. So please, don't shoot the messenger.I just wanted to make some of the readers aware of this.

Sorry. i did not direct you to where you could read about and see for yourself these tests.Look on page #1 of the security forum at computing.net.The thread is called " Latest Antivirus Testing".Please read, and give your honest opinion.A friend of mine was absolutely shocked when he saw the one from Dec/05 because his zonealarm pro antivirus, which is the ez antivirus, tested very poorly. It missed alot of trojans!.

There have been no responces to the thread i asked you to read at computing.net.This tells me 2 things. You are either still in shock or been too busy changing antiviruses.

And this tells me one thing, you got a big ego. :D

Bob

has nothing to do with ego.The Norton users were responding before so why not now.I showed them a place where they could look for themselves at a few recent, unbiased tests and asked for their honest opinion on them. That was days ago now with no responses.Why.I couldn't understand why people get defensive when shown that what their using isn't at the top anymore.I would want someone to tell me.I use F-secure and it does well in the tests, but if someone can show me different, then i'll look at it and maybe switch to Kaspersky.I wouldn't get all defensive about it!.

Dont take it that serious. However my appologies Buzz, i didnt consider consequences on my reply. Now i will keep my personal opinions to my self in the future Buzz!

But to have it straight. I werent critizing your contribution to this thread nor you as a person. I werent critizing at all, you could call it an observation, an analysis of your reply, which i felt had a little arrogant, gloating tone, like "ha i showed you there or what". But im sure i misunderstood you edifiers, in fact i think your contribuiton was very valuable indeed. When it comes to security there are scaringly many of those who just dont get what its all about and that its actually quite serious. And there are a lot of those who just sits on whatever antivirus they got, dont pay attention to the fact that their definitions expired four months ago. And i have an exampel directly relevant to your contribution. Have you heard of the antivirus corporation Norman? They were in the game some years ago, but suddenly fell off the bus, they didnt manage to keep up with the development. The public should get to know these things. For this changes faster than you can imagine. One month you might be in front, two later, you have fallen off. So i think its good you make people aware of this, that even though they have been sitting on Norton out of habit for ages, it might not be the best afterall. And to make it clear, first of all, yes ive read the tests. Always curious for new knowledge, and im not getting defensive as i have no reason to get defensive, im perfectly comfortable with my own situation. I know you just wanted to help, now who doesnt wanna help, i like to help too, at least try ;) . However if i somehow hurt your personal feelings, i can do nothing else than to apologize. Im sorry edifier. I wont do such a thing again, and i promise i will start and write shorter messages. Its just this writing, its hard to stop once you start... see. Yuk, over!

Bob

No apology necessary. No feelings hurt. You did say it best, that sitting on Norton out of habit. That is exactly the point i was trying to make asking to look and see that it is not the best anymore.I see the same thing with Spybot S&D.Everyone seems to recommend it, but the testing i have seen, it's mediocre at best.A friend of mine was always touting his zonealarm security suite.I asked, aren't you worried about the amount of trojans that it's antivirus is missing?.This was news to him.He never bothered to see how it was performing. He now is going with KAV.If norton is the best, then you norton users can go ahead and say it all you want.If it's the truth, then my hats off to ya, your using the best but please, look before you say it.
