Norton virus def folder = 12 gig

Been passed a Laptop with little hard drive space, upon investigation have found the Norton def folder at 12 Gig !!!!
Anyone help as to why this should be (plz)

Uninstall nortons using their removal tool and download and install a free virus program such as AVG, AVIRA, or AVAST.
