Not sure if it's worth it or not..

Okay, so I have a quick question. I don't know too much when it comes to computers... just really the basics. Anyway, my computer crashed and I'm ready for a new one anyway. I was looking on Amazon at the Mac Books and the new ones are $978.00. The used ones start at $920.. but the one I'm looking at is $735. I just can't afford the $978. So, now for my question.. is it worth it/safe buying a used one? Or will I just regret it afterwards?

I don't see any problem with buying used computer items, just do a bit of research on it first.

Mac books are pretty sturdy and reliable.

If you're going to spend that much money on a MacBook, you should save up for the new one. Trust me, that feeling you get when opening the packaging and unwrapping everything is completely worth the added cost.. not to mention the peace of mind in knowing that your laptop hasn't been abused.

If that doesn't interest you, how about the repair costs on a MacBook, or any laptop for that matter? Check into it and see what normal repair costs would be for say, a DVD drive not reading discs.. or a HDD not booting up. Now consider that a used MacBook, or PC (laptop), could incur those costs in the near future and, had you bought the new one Apple, or the PC manufacturer, would have fixed it for free :)

That being said, you can generally get a more powerful, more capable PC (laptop) and run one of the many Linux distributions (or Windows, if you're into that) for probably half of the cost of that MacBook.. something to consider if you don't have a specific need for OSX.

UPDATE: 13" MacBook @ MicroCenter is only $849 right now.. order online, pick it up in the store. It's in-store only (no shipping), so if you happen to have one near you, this could be the deal you're looking for; 13" MacBook - $849
