not sure what i want... college based needs...

i'm going to college next year for engineering... people have recommended my that i build a desktop for pure computing power... i agree with them but i still am kind of partial to buying a laptop... i know the pro's and cons of both...

i guess i'm wondering what would the best configuration be???

i found a dell dimension 6000 with 2 Ghz pentium m, 1 GB DDR2 533, 60GB 5400RPM and other bells and whistles for just shy of 1100 bucks... would this be good enough for running things like autoCAD and other engineering programs... i believe it only had a intel media accelerator 900
 
That dell is a MAJOR rip! I got my system below(well, single 80G and single DVD-RW) for just under $700! Well... That is without a monitor... I don't know if you planned to get one as well, but my LCD was right around 200, so that still keeps the price under what you posted and the system's much more powerful...

But what you need... Hmm... I think laptop would be better suiting for college. They can be quite powerful. I've never tired AutoCAD on my laptop, but I feel quite sure it'd handle it just fine... Not as well as my desktop, but well enough.

maybe, they tend to be more expensive for what you get. i would personally stick with the dell or look around. i would not get anything with specs worse than that for what u want to do
 
the macbook pro is too damn much for me... something around $1200 would be nice

The Dell you posted the specs to sounds pretty nice....I have a Dell...came with 40gb hd, 256mb ram, 10/100 ethernet, cd-rom, and no floppy (plus all the standard stock parts). it cost me under $400. since then, i've added a lot more (1gb ram, 220gb extra hd, etc), and it runs fine. although.....i think i'm running 280watts on a 250watt power supply :O.
