Not sure what programs I need in Startup (msconfig)

Not sure if I should post this here or in another forum(but if this is wrong, please tell me which forum is right :)) ((thank you))

Anyways, I know my computer is slowed down many times by the 57 processes I have at once, most of which I have NO clue what they are. Well, as a start to fix this, I went into msconfig to close down some startups. I closed things like Quicktime, Realplayer, some dumb Hp things(my comp is hp pre-built), weatherbug, quicken, etc, etc.... But now im lost what else I can shut off without affecting my comp?

I frequently use AOL and iTunes, so when I see things like 'iTunesHelper', 'AOLSoftware', 'AOLDial'(im on broadband btw), and such, im hesitant.

In addition, I have no clue what things like 'sribvau', 'ALCXMNTR', 'ccAPP', or 'NvMcTray'.

If anyone could help me that would be great! Or, just knowing what startups I need to keep up would help too! :D

P.S. There is this one startup, 'Updates from HP'....do I really need this? I mean, the only updates I really see are ads anyway....

Thank you!

These things that are placed in the msconfig file, are placed there for you to remove. If the program had to always be running, you would not have a choise to turn it off. Yes it is nice to have aol open fast, and that all that those things for aol do in the msconfig. The nv... thing is for nvidia. Google it if you dont know what it is.

sorry im such a nub.. lol... but thanks for the tip! Google really helps! ^^ who'dve known? (not me i guess) ((is who'dve a word? ><))

thanks :)

I do have another quick question.. I looke dup 'AOLDial.exe' and it says "installed alongside the AOL Internet software (version 9 and above), and allows for un-assisted dialling of the Internet. This program is a non-essential process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems."

If im on broadband anyway, do I need this?

thx

If your router makes the connection remove it. If your desktop makes the connection everytime you bring up aol or IE, then don't remove it.

Can you take a screen shot of your startup programs in your msconfig?
It'll be easier to assist so we know what is there exactly than rather you not being sure or dont remember some.
