Hi all,

Not sure where to post so I hope here is ok.

I have a question that has been annoying me for a while now, is there anyway someone can check on the network (home network) what sites I have visited and what I have wrote and also have access to my computer without me knowing? ie on the router or anything like that?? sorry I know nothing about computers

thanks in advance

Browsing history, keystroke loggers, data miners, and having remote access enabled are a few of the things that can be used to track the sites you visit and a degree of text. Keystroke loggers record the typing done on a machine. The most common item used to track your movements on the web is called "cookies" which are small text files created when visiting a site or logging into an email account online.

Remote access is the newer feature seen on XP systems that can be enabled unknowingly by some malwares. Most of the time this is done to allow access of one system by another on the same network for file/printer sharing and troubleshooting purposes. But it can be a vunerability at times.

cookies I TRY and get rid of often (I clear all the data quite often using Clear private data) I also run ad-aware, spybot, avast and avg quite often (I a paranoid about spyware lol)
Remote access is what I am worried about as my partner knows loads about computers and I know nothing about them, in my computer invitations have been knocked off but I dont know if he has already set it up (I gave him the password for my laptop but then we argued so I changed it again but he will never give me his) so I am wondering what information he can gather about what I am doing without access to my computer as he said when I said about clearing my history often that there are other ways to find out.
Is there any way on how he can find this info out and access my laptop?

Thanks

The only thing that can be done between two systems directly is a common folder created for remote sharing. On more systems tied into a network you would have shared access to this type of folder along with a common printer. If your laptop was set for remote access you would have to be connected online for this. Enabling the firewall in XP will prevent anything like this however. The link explains how to protect laptops with wireless internet.

The article here will take you through the step by step process of disabling the remote desktop and remote access features in XP. With those disabled there isn't any way other then having loaded a VBScript onto your portable to autolog and autosend information out online. But you would have more to worry from a trojan type spyware in that regard. http://netsecurity.about.com/b/a/256763.htm
