Not utilizing all RAM

I just added two sticks of 256 mb PC 2700U DDR RAM to my computer that used to have one stick of 512 PC 2700 DDR RAM. But the computer doesn't see the new sticks and says it's still using 512. Or maybe it only sees the new sticks and not the old one, I don't know. Does anybody know if it's possible for me to use the full 1 GB? I'm not sure if PC2700U is the same as PC2700..... and old post from another forum seemed to suggest so, I so tried it. :\
 
it should work, try isoating the new ram, (just put in the new ram, take out old) and see if it works. plz post back results
 
im not a techie on the subject butt......parity has to be same. I suspect you have an issue with same type ram. for sure don't mix one size with another in same bank.
 
Well I know the "new" memory is not faulty because it was just running fine on another computer. Also what exactly do you mean don't mix different size mem. on the same bank? There are three slots of memory. Doesn't a slot mean a bank? The a7v8x-x motherboard manual doesn't seem to group them any other way.
