Notebook CPU

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to buy a high-end laptop for mostly multimedia, editing, intensive applications, and general office work and browsing. Looking at the CPU's however, i'm a little stuck.

The model i'm looking at offers a range of Intel Core 2 Duo, Or Core 2 Quad processors, but i'm having a little difficulty at deciding which is the best.

These two CPU upgrades are the same price, but which is better?

Intel Core 2 Duo P9600 2.66GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 2.00GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB

Also is the $85 Intel Turbo Cache worth the money?

I'm getting this model shipped from US to UK, and was wondering if there would be any compatibility issues, for example with power?

That's a really tough call. For the applications that you will be running and assuming you want to keep the laptop for at least a couple years, I would recommend the Core 2 Quad Q9000. I believe the extra 2 cores will perform better, even though they are 660MHz slower. As for the turbo cache, I haven't done much research into it but from what I remember it's basically just flash memory onboard for use as ReadBoost memory in Vista. As long as you have 2-4GB of RAM I'd pass on it.

That's what i initially thought; i'll see if i can save up the extra £200 and get the Core 2 Quad Q9100 2.26GHz, 12MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB instead.

I've been researching a lot of Laptops, and i think i've found the best deal. It's a M570ETU, i believe it's one of the models Sager resells. Due it being 'non-branded' so to speak, it's much cheaper then from the retailers.

Here's my current spec:

That will be an amazing laptop! Just curious though, how much more are you paying for the Blu-Ray drive?

I was hoping to add a Blu-Ray re-writer, to make it a little more 'future proof'.

But to add the Blu-Ray reader is +$175

Do you plan to actually watch Blu-Ray movies? I only ask because while it may be nice to have, if you don't plan on using it then save your money and spend it some other way.

Yes, i probably will. Like i said, i'll be taking it to University, and it'll also be the only Blu-Ray disk player in the house, so i'll wire it up the family HD tv and enjoy HD movies on a big screen.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that in order to watch Blu-Ray movies on an external TV all devices need to be HDCP compliant. This means that you need to use a digital cable such as DVI or HDMI, not an analog cable like VGA or S-Video. Your TV also needs to be HDCP compliant, which is just something to think about and research before hand.
