Nothing opens after virus removal

Unsheathed

New Member
Hello,
So I was recently a victim of "XP Anti-Virus 2012." Knowing this was a virus, I immediately began my normal sweeps of AVG and Spyware Terminator. None of which worked, probably because they're outdated versions. I was able to reboot in safe mode with networking and intalled the newest version of MalwareBytes and ran a full scan and deleted the issues that arose. Well, I believe it got the virus, but the problem is I think it got more than just the virus. Now everytime I try to launch an application or anything at all, I get a Windows pop-up asking me what program I wish to open the program with. For example, when I attempt to run System Restore, the pop-up occurs listing other various programs such as Firefox, IE, Adobe, and other installed programs. So I basically can't open any programs anymore.
Good news, no more XP Anti-Virus 2012 pop-ups.
So yeah. If I could somehow get assistance in making my computer usable again, it'd be much appreciated. As you can tell, I'm not too knowledgable with computers.
Thank you.

Thank you. I appreciate it, Bigfellla. But another problem of mine, I can't seem to locate the XP disc. I would just do a clean sweep and reinstall if I had it, but over the years it must've been put someplace else where it slipped my mind.
Are there any other possible solutions?

Not sure what your operating system is but google your OS followed by .exe fix.

i.e XP .exe fix.

Then take it to the affected machine and double click it, this will add it to the registry and you should be good to go.

First things first:

  1. Boot into F8 safe mode (with networking) and back up your files on to a seperate drive such as an external hard drive or thumb drive, dvd etc
  2. Download and install PC Wizard from my sig (so we can accertain your motherboard drivers)
  3. Run it and go to FILE, SAVE AS, and click OK
  4. Copy the text into this thread..

    then

  5. Try borrow a Win XP CD. Ensure you have your licence key (activation key)
  6. If that fails, go to any ebay site such as this (Ebay link) and get your self a new CD.
  7. If that will take too long, go to your local (non-franchise) PC shop ask to borrow/obtain one. They will have millions lying around i bet.
  8. If that will take fails, you need to buy Windows 7 (check compatiability first)
  9. If that fails, go to 1 or take it to a repair guy ;)
  10. Then reinstall making sure you have your motherboard drivers on hand (see step 2)

So in summary
  • Backup
  • Post PC Wizard Report
  • Get Win XP CD
  • Download motherboard drivers
  • Reinstall

This usually means you are still infected. You will need to download this file from an uninfected pc and transfer it via a usb flash drive and then run it.

You will need to boot to safe mode by pressing F8 button on startup.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

To run hijiackthis, do the following.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces

If you are still unable to run programs in safe mode then do the following.

Download and run exehelper. You may need to right click on that link and click on open in new window for the download box to appear. And then try running the combofix file in regular bootup mode, it should then work.

Wow, thanks for the great replies.
Here is the Combofix log:

Update:
The computer seems to be working alright. Programs are running, internet is up, etc.
However, every now and then my computer locks up and beeps a ton. Like keys are constantly being held on my keyboard. I have to do a forced shutdown because the computer is completely frozen (while beeping and opening a few windows, like whatever the hotkey buttons are). This has happened mid-game (Guild Wars), while surfing the net, and while on the AVG interface. I'll post again if it happens again.
Just as a side note: I ran Combofix twice. I saved the first log but did not post it. If necessary, I can post it. =).

Thanks again to both of you. You've been a ton of help!

Like keys are constantly being held on my keyboard. I have to do a forced shutdown because the computer is completely frozen (while beeping and opening a few windows, like whatever the hotkey buttons are).

You can turn hotkeys & sticky keys off. For sticky keys all you have to do is double click the icon in taskbar and there should be an option to disable them in the window that opens.

I looked up how to turn off the hotkeys. According to what I've read, you can turn all of the hotkeys off by editing the registry.

Here's a link to the best article I've seen on it so far http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/77881-windows-hotkeys.html. Even though it's for Vista I would still try that tutorial because the registry locations may be the same as in XP. After you do that the annoying beeping will quit.

I've had to remove Windows Antivirus 2011 (or something similar to what you have) from a laptop before which had the same symptoms you are having now. It would freeze and run very slowly. I eventually got rid of it by running an Avast boot-time scan, Malewarebytes, and then SuperAntiSpyware. There was also problems with the registry (programs not opening) so I had to replace the "lnk.reg" file and fix a few other registry problems.

Dear Unsheathed, it might be late for you but I am sure that it will be definitely useful for the users for the same issue. The problem from which you suffer is the corruption and removal of important system files.
Whenever the PC is scanned and the virus are deleted without the virus removal guide, then important system files are lost and you might be unable to use your PC.
Repair it with the same disc of your OS version or you might have to install a new OS for your PC.
