Now or later?

Ok so im going to buy a laptop. I want to get one as soon as possible but am willing to wait for the best graphics options for gaming. Should i got with the dell xps now with a nvidio geforce go 7950gtx. This laptop would be without santa rosa technology. but i could still buy the xg station when on the market, and upgrade to desktop dx10 graphics for about $400. Or should i wait till the mobile dx10 cards come out with santa rosa? I was thinking the 7950gtx might be my better option, and it would probably cost the same price to upgrade to the mobile dx10 as it would be to buy the xg station and desktop card, but i would get better graphix with the first option.

Gee? You are just right to spring this thread about Dell on! :P http://www.computerforum.com/81163-dell-hell.html

The thread there starts with the conversation someone "supposedly" had with Dell tech support? You will obviously have to get through some utterances to "get the drift" about how people feel about Dell products. !

There are other makes like Toshiba, Sony, and a few to add there that seem to have more people happy. Ordering a good make and model with 2gb not 1gb of memory will go much better for gaming. Desktop(custom built) will always be the best way to go for a gaming system due to the expanibility seen there. You can put the higher end video, sound, memory, and everything else needed to boost performance.

Currently XP is still the favored OS since some games still see problems. You can still order custom laptops with XP and the card of choice. DX10 cards won't be out for some months while newer DX10 required games are sure to follow. Presently all cards only need DX9 but run 10. XP or Vista? That should be what determines the card there.

You mean presently all games? Well i was thinking of getting vista, and when the bugs with games get worked out i will get the updates to the OS. And although dx10 is probably best for that, i can still use the xg station to have a dx10 card. Although they are not out yet, they will be shortly. I dont need dx10 now but know i will want it in the future. Should i wait to buy a laptop with mobile dx10 graphics in it, or use the asus xg station to have desktop dx10 graphics? (I know it wont match up to desktop performance, but it has shown 9x better than mobile graphics in the tests run)

First thing to mention right away is that DX10 won't work on XP as far as the OS. It comes included in the latest version Vista at the moment with no separate download or update to even try on an XP installation. Supposedly once you have a DX10 card you will need Vista to run it for this reason.

On a 98 system you could update from DX6 to DX9c without a problem. So far due to the large amount of time between XP's 2001 release and the 2004 release of DX9 the new version seen in Vista can only run in Vista while there has been mention of the first DX9L version of Direct X for XP in order to run the new DX10 games that will come out sometime. New softwares as well as games will have to offer some type of backward support for XP and maybe 2000 on some.

thankyou for that information, but im asking wether you think it would be a better choice to buy a laptop now or wait...im getting vista either way

Buying a "good" laptop also includes the type of application you have for it as well as the price range in mind. It sounds like you want a good and rather new video card for gaming and maybe a lot of multimedia to add to that or some other graphic intensive programs were a good card is needed.

With Vista and a good model laptop that has some good upgrade capability, since most lack in that area, would allow you to go for one now and simply swap video cards out later. What most don't realize is that hardwares turn over far faster then softwares. What you buy now is outdated several months later when the new "bells and whistles" are available. And laptops generally see higher prices for things over desktops.

Leaving room for later expansion at any time is the thing to look at most when going to look at any compact portable unit. What are your options as far as memory, going for a larger hard drive, and other features included are also things to look at in addition to a simple swap of video cards. But before deciding a Dell model? You may want a look at the link posted earlier.

If I was in the same spot you are I would be first looking at what makes and models would be the best to consider. I've pondered on laptops for years now and still haven't decided! "that long! " I guess I'm too stuck on custom built desktops there. :P

ok well ive done my research, and for the money and for what i want, dell seems to be the best right now...and although the customer service sux im willing to put up with that.

I am going to buy a laptop with 2 gigs of ram, a geforce go 7950, intel core two duo for laptops(highest speed i can get), and vista os. I would then use the xg station to have a dx10 desktop card used with my laptop.

Now my question is should i get that now...or wait for the same system with a dx10 video card(meant for mobiles so probably slower than the xg station setup) already installed.
