I have a sony pcg-fxa63 laptop and I am having major issues. I was attempting to wipe windows and reinstall xp on the computer after getting it back from a friend I had lent it to. I inserted my win xp disk... and got to the partitioning phase. I deleted the existing partition and began the fresh install. About 33% of the way through installing the setup files, I began having problems because certain network files would not go through. It would ask me if I wanted to try again, or skip them. After several attempts, I ended up skipping several of them. Then...my dog frantically ran by knocking the computer plug out of the wall. Unfortunately... my battery has literally no life and this computer needs to be plugged in. So obviously... the computer was shut off 33% through install. Upon restarting the computer in an attempt to resart the installation process, it will not read the cd drive and start the windows xp installation process. I get nothing but a black screen that says...... NTDLR is missing Press ctrl alt delete to restart. Can anyone please help me sort this out? I am currently using a friends computer to type this cuz for now that laptop is my only computer. Any help is good help and very appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not really sure what exactly happened or how the installation works if indeed interrupted. Next time make sure you don't involve the same circumstances (i.e. dog and cords hanging or laying around).

Some tips might be take out battery for 15 minutes, then reboot. Another idea might be to take out ram and re-insert it.

This is all running off of ideas so give what you feel comfortable with a try.

Yeah... reseated ram, and removed battery. I still get the same message. I have been researching this issue for hours now. Everywhere I look says I should just be able to put in my windows disk and restart the installation. Problem is, it will not rean the cd drive. I get the same error message over and over again. I have tried every boot sequence imaginable. This sucks... Can anyone give me any other suggestions?

i got the same msg.
At start, i got a message, "BOOTMGR is missing. press ctrl alt del to restart.
i reasearched on net and found some ways to repair it.
i booted into DOS and tried fixing that problem using "Bootrec" command and i thought i was succesfull.
but when i restarted, instead of BOOTMGr, NTDLR was missing.

Then i again booted into DOS, and i formatted the C: drive from DOS, and again the BOOTMGR is missing.
I still have the problem on one of my lappy.

I know that this reply gives u no help, but i think this may provide a clue to any one more intelligent than me, who can help us both.

i had a problem similar to this one. luckily, i have an old windows98 disk laying around. i just boot up with cd support and run fdisk (i guess fdisk is in dos). delete all partition information, remove the disk and restart. when you run your xp setup, it will create the new partition for you. this works great for putting xp back on a vista machine too.

Yeah it's a hard drive thing. You computer doesnt have a boot manager so that's why it's freaking out. Just put the windows disk back in and start from scratch. If it doesn't read from the CD ROM then go into your bios and make it so the hard drive isn't on the bootable drives. Just make sure to change it back when you get done with the install.

NTLDR is what boots Windows XP and previous NT based systems.

I can walk you through fixing this but I need more info:

1) What OS are you using?

2) Do you have a CD for that OS?

3) Are you OK with working from the command line?

i forgot to put in.
with the boot mgr missing, whenever i tried to install xp on it, it boots well from CD, loads all the files and then give a message that no hard drive was detected, so the setup cant continue, press f3 to quit.

hell with the BOOTMGR!!!
