Ntl Broadband Problem

Hi guys, got a problem with my Ntl Broadband, I would be very grateful if you could help out.

When I connect the box to my computer, it notifys me that its connected but no websites or anything works. Pinging other sites including www.ntlworld.co.uk dont work. However on some freinds computers (in a diffarent area) it works. Im not sure whether it is something to do with the area or something to do with my computer. Well...i hope not lol.

Having internet back would be a great relief. Any help much appriciated. Thanks
 
Sounds like you might have a firewall up. If you do, that could be preventing you from accessing outside sites. Check your router if you have one, and any software on your computer that might be serving as a firewall, such as zonealarm or the microsoft secuity center. Also check if you are getting an ip address (start, run, type in 'cmd' than 'ipconfig')
 
well me and my dad had the same problem what he needed to do was Unplug the Modem and reinstall it on his machine and everything worked fine
 
try this

if it's a set top box

open up network connections and get to the point were you can click repair ( i think it gets you a new ip address).

turn off / on the set top box (ie unplug the mains lead) then click repair on the pc. make sue you do this before the middle light stops flashing.

Should do the trick.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. Im not sure what a top box is although i tried your suggestion martin, though it didnt work. Im also pretty sure I took all firewalls off and still no luck. However I tried the cmd ipconfig and i am getting an ip address. I also retried the ping command, and it worked this time. I pinged my own ip address, worked, pinged www.ntlworld.co.uk, worked and pinged others...everything worked. But internet (explorer) still didnt work, neither did my p2p program (sharaza) or msn.

i have this problem sometime if my IE isnt working my Msn will still work i can send u IE zipped up via msn ...or this message board
 
I have firefox on my other computer and that dosent work either. Do you mean you`ll send me a working version of IE? I already have it it just dosent work.

if you get an ip, AND your able to ping the internet, then TCP/IP is working, but interface between IP and Windows is not. this is called your WINSOCK. Download this utility and run it, reboot and test your IE, let us know. :)

If that doesn't work, we'll have to dig deeper, maybe broken LSP's, but lets see...
 
I think what Byteman had in mind was a broken chain in the winsock (he doesn't seem to be around today). Download Hijackthis here, click "scan and save logfile", copy and paste the log here.
 
yup, you've got it! broken layered service providers, hjt will let us know...

Edit: Buzz, i haven't been around as much lately, cuz life is getting in the way, happens sometimes. :(
