hey i gotta problem here. if my computa crashes i get a msg when i cold boot it that says "NTLDR is missing, push any key to retry" or somethng similar but the msg is just repeated when i push a key. ive found that i can bypass it by pushing F8 and booting from my empty CD drive but this is a hassle that aint necessary. it happens occasionly when i warm boot it as well. it anyone have any ideas??? im running windows xp sp1

The NTLDR file is necessary for the operating system to function properly. Best thing to do would be to re-install XP either by fully formatting and re-installing or doing a repair install.

last time i ran into this problem, it was because of a corrupted or incorrect boot.ini. see below for the steps i took to fix it. if you don't want to bother with the steps then reinstalling is a good last resort.

-Make a boot floppy disk, with NTLDR, NTDETECT, boot.in files on it.
-edit the boot.ini on the floppy to point to the partition of your XP installation
-boot up windows using the floppy
-Start/Run and type msconfig, on the boot.ini tab click "check all boot paths" and reboot normally without the floppy

That will fix any bogus entries in the boot.ini file. :)

Hmm, never tried it that way. I always figured it was safer/easier to do a repair install of windows. Will have to remeber that the next time I get a corrupt/missing NTLDR.
