nvidia and ati in a nutshell

I use adobe graphics programs heavily on vista with my laptop and a 22" samsung. I would like to get a three by the winter. I haven't purchased anything for my dream desktop yet... Wait, can a single card support three panels?

Anyway, my budget is between $130 and $190. Here are my questions...

ati or nvidia? why is one better than the other for my purposes?

Also, please include links you guys may find to the best deals within my budget.

-thx

With that kind of budget, you could go with the 4850 (ATi), or the 9800 GTX (Nvidia). Nvidia and ATi are the only two graphics manufacturers, both are great companies, and I wouldn't really say that one is better than the other (even though Nvidia currently has the most powerful single card on the market) it just depends on how much you are willing to spend.

nope. performance of a card doesn't depend on the operating system.

Not necessarily, my friend had a Nvidia card for Vista and the drivers didn't work for some reason. So he took it back to the store, got a replacement for an ATi card and the drivers seemed fine.

No, the OS has nothing to do with how stable the card is. Back when Vista first came out Nvidia was kind of slow in releasing all of their Vista drivers, but that's it, every card is supported by both 32 and 64 bit Vista.

Well if u wanted to run three monitors you would need 2 video cards. So that might cut your budget back. You could get 2 9600GT's. They are very good cards comparable to the 8800GT and apparent the 9800GT too since it's exactly the same xP Plus the 9600GT uses hardly any energy in SLI.

I heard that ATI is better for vista...this sounds bias and/or vague...is that true?
NVIDIA did have fair bit of trouble getting their drivers to work on Vista, there were heaps of conspiracy theories and whatnot arund that Microsoft had done those on purpose, but I would think the problems would've been fixed already.

Personally, I would go for Radeon 4850, though. It's one of the bestestest cards (esp. for the money) out there right now.
