nVidia cards, i'm confused

ok, i have noticed that there is 8 series cards and 9 series cards. i have heard some people say that the GeForce 8800GT is better than some 9 series cards, i.e. 9600, 9800. why is this? how does the nVidia numbering system work?

The first digit correlates to the generation. And the next 3 digits refer to the model. Lower numbered cards like the 8300 are made to be low performance so if you a high performance card of the previous generation like the 7800, it will be faster.

The 8800GT and 9800GT are the same card.

The 9800GTX+ and the GTS 250 are the same card, they made the PCB shorter on the 250.

They can also be misleading since technology increases as each series is developed. For example, the 9600GT can almost perform as well as the 8800GT, but the 8600GT falls way short of the 8800GT.

I have a GTX 280 and so far that has run every game like crysis and all that on a dual monitor system, so if you are looking at the high end cards like that, this is all you would need so far. There is no point in the GTX 295 and such...yet.

That sucks I brought a 9400gt because I thought it was better than my brothers 8800gt.

If I remember correctly:

8800GT = 9800GT = GTS240 (?)
9800GTX = overclocked 8800GTS (G92)
9800GTX+ = GTS250
