NVidia GeForce GTX 680 Overheating

Hello, I've been monitoring the temps of my GTX 680 while playing World of Warcraft, basically the only computer game that I really play for long periods of time. I've recently had to lower the settings, I always ran everything on Ultra and never had any problems, all the way down to fair. While running on Ultra, my temps were getting close to 90 degrees Celsius. While I have been running on Fair, temps get close to 80 degrees Celsius when I am in main cities. I never had overheating problems with my GPU previously, the airflow is fine and I even removed the outer case of thee GPU to try and cool it off a bit, but it's still running hot. I've been doing some more research and I'm thinking that it may need new thermal paste? I actually haven't looked at my GPU because to be honestly I'm not exactly sure what I am supposed to do. Could this possibly be the problem? I didn't have overheating problems until about a month ago, my computer stays around 45-50 degrees celsius when I'm off the game and only using the internet. If you think this may be the problem, what kind of thermal paste do you recommend buying? I've watched multiple youtube videos on how to replace it and I'm fairly confident that I will be able to do it carefully and accurately. Thanks for your help :)

Hi and welcome to Computerforum. :)

Are you sure fan/s still working on your card?

It could just be it needs fresh thermal paste like you mentioned as it does eventually go quite dry and doesn't work like it use too when it was new,Id recommend any of the following.

  • arctic silver 5
  • Arctic Cooling MX-4
  • Shin-Etsu

Take a look at this video on how to remove and re-apply thermal paste if your unsure. :)..its very easy though.

98C is the maximum temperature for a GTX 680. "Close to 80C" is fine, perfectly normal.

No it's not. He said close to 90 when running on Ultra then close to 80 for running on Fair. WoW should not make your GPU heat up like that. Also setting changes like that shouldn't change the temp that much either.

Honestly you could probably get away with dusting it out. Get a can of compressed air or an air compressor and blast the hell out of the fans and heatsink. If that doesn't work try new thermal paste. If it's just now starting to overheat, probably just needs some cleaning.

Edit: A 680 is a little slower than my 7970 I have. Flying around above Stormwind on Ultra settings and I'm getting just about 50 degrees. My GPU normally will run around 65-70 at 100 percent full load. WoW shouldn't stress your temperatures all the way up to 80-90.

What is the OP's ambient temperature?

That's not really going to matter when you're already up to 90 degrees Celsius running a 10 year old game... Any semi-reasonable ambient temp would be below 35 degrees Celsius so you're still looking at building up an additional 60 degrees of heat or so, probably more.

Ah, did not see the 90° thing. Yeah that's excessive. Blow out the dust first, if that fails, reapply TPU.
