OC an Intel?

I want a processor more powerful than a 2.4Ghz core 2 quad, but the prices are way too high after 2.4Ghz. I was wondering if it would be safe to OC a 2.4Ghz intel core 2 quad to about 2.6Ghz or possibly 2.7Ghz? I heard intels OC very well. I know the motherboard you have also plays an important role.

So, can someone look at the CPU/Motherboard combo I want to get and tell me how safe and how far I could OC the CPU?

Well first of all, a C2D @ 2.0GHz is about equal to an X2 5000+ (2.6GHz). What I'm trying to say, is that Intel chips (newer ones anyways) are much more efficient than AMDs. So if you're coming from an AMD build, know that first of all.

And second of all, the Q6600 overclocks very well, you can get it to ~ 3.4GHz on air.

3.4GHz is the upper range for the Q6600, maybe 3.6GHz if you're lucky. (On air that is).

As for heatsinks, just look in to whatever one you buy. Do some research, and find some comparisons. If it's a large one, make sure it'll fit in your case.

Oh, and if you wait until April 22 (somewhere around there) Intel's cutting prices. I'd get the Q6700 if I were you.

I don't plan on buying this for a while since AMD can now make higher clocked quad cores and Intel will need to be a little more competitive.

Except the intel quads overclock better and still beat out the phenoms with lower clock speeds.

Dont go with AMD, they're the ones that need to be competitive.

I never said I was going with AMD. I said AMD is getting into higher speeds and soon Intel will have to drop their prices some to compete. Currently an AMD 2.5Ghz Phenom is cheaper than an Intel 2.4Ghz core 2 quad, so Intel will probably drop their core 2 quads a bit. Though I heard that the Phenoms are slower than their equivalent core 2 quads.

Thats because the 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad performs much better then the 2.5GHz AMD Phenom. AMD is struggling, Intel is in a great position right now.

The 2.4GHz quad not only performs better than the Phenom at stock but like previously stated can be clocked up to 3.2-3.7GHz on air. Intel is charging the correct price. An extreme majority of Phenoms wont go past 2.7GHz stable. AMD really isn't putting up much of a fight.
