OC question - 9950

Hey I'm overclocking my Phenom x4 9950, it does good while stress testing it with Prime95 @ 3.0Ghz (default for this Processor is 2.6Ghz) I only had to raise the Vcore and the Voltage-NB up .50mv, and it seems stable @ 3.0Ghz, (temps with load is 50C), but when I up the clock by .100, it will stress test for about 10 seconds then crash, and the max temps before it crashes is 52C.. So I went back to Bios and raised the Vcore up .100mv to see if that helped, and it didn't. So what am I doing wrong?

Dont think your doing anything wrong really. Phenom I had a average 3.0 overclock. 3.2 if you got a really good one. That is, not going nuts with the voltage/Heat. If your using your multiplier to overclock there is really no reason to bump up your N/B voltage.

Phenom I seemed to overclock alittle better if you have a Southbridge of SB710 and above with ACC.

The only thing you can do is try more voltage, if that doesn't work than you pretty much have your max at 3.0ghz then (on air cooling anyway)

I had that same motherboard, it wasn't the greatest for overclocking. It's just a 780g board with an SB700. The only voltage options are adding .05, .1, and .15 volts thats it. So try .15, and see what happens. Watch your temps! Anything below 65c is OK.
 
I got to 3.6 GHz stable with a NB voltage bump. I've heard of people getting 4.0 GHz with the 9950. I changed the multiplier to 18 x 200 and bumped the voltage to about 1.41.

:O You must have a better motherboard than I do.. It'll crash @ 3.2Ghz Vcore @ .150mv and -NB @ .50mv about 30 seconds in a stress test .. :(
 
Loosen up the RAM timings a bit. Also, the multiplier is a big factor. Using the default x13 multiplier probably won't get the best result.

Not all CPU's overclock the same. Most 9950's hit a wall at 3.2ghz. He hit a wall sooner because his motherboard has crappy overclocking options. I've owned that board, you cannot manually put in your own voltage. All you can do is add .05, .1, or .15 volts. Thats it, thats the only options for Vcore.

Do you still want a micro ATX board? The gigabyte I have is a good overclocker for a bargain price. But it's an AM3 board which means ddr3 ram. There is an AM2+ version of it-

I really don't know if everything will be the same, I see no reason it wouldn't be. Excellent options in the Bios, I love gigabyte's bios' they are the easiest to navigate hands down.

Note- These are both mATX board based off what you have now. You have a lot more options if your case can fit a full atx board.
