Occassional Slow Downs.

I don't know why everytime I put on a game e.g. EVE online or Company of Heroes, my normal framerates would be 50-60. Very playable. On maxed setting and high setting respectively.

A few minutes into the game, the framerates will fall down to 20-30. After 3-5 minutes, the game would pick up and return to the normal FPS of 50-60. Rinse and Repeat the whole process again.

My Specs are:
E6600 Core 2 Duo
8800GTX
2GB RAM
500GB HD.

The only way I can get it back to speed is do a complete system reformat, well that what my friends told me. One snag though, I don't have my original XP disk. Will a back to factory settings works?

Advanced thanks, cookies and milk to someone who can help. I wanted to do this because a new game is coming out Dawn of War 2, since it say my computer should be more then enough to handle it, I don't want crappy framerates every few minutes.

just a guess but maybe you have a program running in the background thats trying to do something major every couple minutes or so.

Hmm, I couldn't think of anything that might affect the performance. Anti-Virus is turned off and it's still the same thing.

One thing is nagging me though, suspicion to be precise. Before I was transferring a couple of files off a cd and it was very very slow, every couple of minutes it would kick in and completely mess me up. I remedied that situation by doing a system restore to the day before.

Any thoughts on how I might find out?

Nick.

A list of your running processes might be helpful. There is a program somewhere that will do this for you, but I can't remember the name
