As the titel says...

So I have the 64X2 4000+, stock @ 2.1GHz. Old I know shut up :P. For quite a while, I had my CPU OCed to 2.26GHZ. Not bad for a stock cooler. Or is it? Anyway, I OCed it to 2.7GHz, an' all of a sudden, the computer crashes, after playing a game, for lie 15-20 min! I am pretty sure the CPU wasn't to hot, cuz it didn't even hit 50C. with 2.6GHz, I had idle temps of 29, and load temps of 45. Is this too hot? Or do I have to givet he CPU more voltage? Can I damage my CPU with too muh voltage? Just one more thing, is it recomended to re-apply thermal paste every so often or no?

Thanks!

Thats why if you overclock you run a stress test such as prime 95..;) But it could be you need to give it a bump in vcore, and unless you start adding crazy amounts of voltage then it should be fine.

Whats the vcore? And where do I get prime 95?

stranglehold, how do I check my voltage, HT and memory? is the mem my ram you are talking about or my mem on the cpu? Im afraid im a ocing newb, all i really know is the clock ocing :P

Don't forget that the stock is 2.1 ghz. I had it at 2.26, and pushed it to 2.7. Right now its at 2.21Ghz.

Get CPU-Z from http://cpuid.com it's a good little program that should tell you most if not all the information you need

It could be your VCore is too low, but it could be you've pushed your RAM, PCI bus, PCI-e/AGP up too much, do you have any dividers or locks in your BIOS?

trying to get a 600mhz overclock out of a non-BE AMD processor will be hard. i have my 5000+BE from 2.6ghz-3.2ghz, and thats will a vcore bump and aftermarket cooling. i believe on my 4400+ i got like a 200mhz overclock. or maybe 250? idk but it wasn't much.

Springy, will PCwizard do? Its the newest version, and of course, its from cupid. And how do I check for dividers/locks? I'm afraid I am not the most knoledgeable in this section of computers...

Mr.Johanssen, I have had my proc up to 2.3GHz, but I couldn't do gaming at the time, so I put it back down :P. I think With my stock cooler, I could possibly leave it at 2.3, but I'm not gonna risk it. If it turns out I have to bump the voltage, I'm not gonna do it, I can't afford to have a cpu die on me. Thanks for the replies guys.

PCWizard has all the stuff CPU-Z has, but CPU-Z is focused on the CPU/board/RAM, whereas PCW displays information about the entire system, IE easier to root through CPU-Z :P

KK.

So I broke the promise to my self: I bumped the voltage. In the bios it said 1300, so i bumped it to 1325, though in PCW it says 1360? Im gonna take the higher number for granted, to make sure that I have no problems. Can that amount of voltage ruin the cpu? How much of a change is safe? Also, just wonderin, would reapplying thermal paste gonna help my temps?

I OCed the proc up to 2.5GHz. Later to day, I am gonna put it up, bit by bit.

Side question: is the PCW Rating similar to 3dmark06? I got 3410(3409.94 exactly).
