OCing a QX6800

Last night I was trying to see just how far I could go. I ended up with the FSB speed set to 440MHz, Vcore @ 1.375, DDR2 timing @ 4-4-4-12 @ 1066MHz, processor multiplier to 8, and the PCIe bus @ 210 mhz. The cpu temp jumped to 58c but stayed there. I'm not sure what all that means but I got 345 Frames/sec on a DOOM3 time demo test and the CPU is clocked @ about 3.7GHz. The system seems to be stable and I wonder if I can push it any further

But seriously, I don't know if you should go any further, although I have heard of QX6800's getting to 4GHz so I don't know...

By the way, how did you get you QX6800?, like where and stuff.

Set the PCIe bus to 100 and keep it there. That's pretty good overclock already.

Amazon.com has had them for a few months. They sell faster than intel seems to be willing to produce them... which is surprising because I paid $1800 for the first one.... about $1300 more than anyone should have to pay for a block of sand. Now they're going for a little under $1000.
I'm probably going to tune it down to about 3.4-3.5 ghz. Whatever it takes to bring the temp down to around 50c.
I reset the PCIe bus to AUTO and it seems to be even faster now... another 23 frames/sec

Maybe your not familiar with Intel's processors... The Extreme series (with the X), are enthusiast CPU's with unlocked multipliers, they are designed to be overclocked! By not overclocking them, you are wasting your money.

You cant maintain 60fps, just because you get 60fps most of the time doesnt mean you will hit a scenario where your fps will drop to 20 or so, the higher the FPS the better, so you dont have as drastic FPS hits.
 
Would I need a water cooling on the QX6800, because I have heard that it needs some hefty cooling shit...

XRT, I think he actually has the x6800,not QX. The X6800 is dual core, not quad. The QX6800 is not available on amazon, and the X6800 is just under 1000 dollars, as he stated.

Oops... my mistake... You're right that it is the x6800 -not the qx6800- available on amazon.com.
 
As long as you have a good passive cooler and adequate case fans, then it should be fine to a degree.
 
I "detuned" my system - for lack of a better word - to 3.6 ghz and the temp hasn't gone above 40c since. As to where you can get a QX6800... I didn't even know they weren't available to the general public. I've been getting mine through a friend who runs a company called Maingear. Rumor is they will probably be available sometime in the next month or so.
They're designed to be reliable up to temps of 75c, so anything under 70c is okay.
