OCing (again)

I just got ALL the info I need in overclocking from my IT teacher at school, my last question is: If my CPU overheats will I need a cooling system? If so what kind?

Thanks.

well i assume you have a heatsink on it, and a rule of thumb is, when it overheats to stop and go back down to the nessacary level.

Hehe

You should see what the max temp of your CPU is. If it's safely from that value, then you should not really need to buy extra cooling. I for example cool my overclocked Athlon 64 3000+ with the stock cooler and face no problems whatsoever (approx 750Mhz OC and temp at 29 Celsius at idle). My suggestion...move in small increments and monitor temps (run stress tests).

JAN :D

Once you overclock, go into BIOS and look at the temp. if its fine, then boot into windows and continue monitoring the temp via speedfan. Then run some tests like 3DMark or PCMark.

A pure CPU test is a thing called SuperPi, its simple, it creates the value of Pi (that we know as 3.41) to several million decimal places...... like up to 64 million digits, this takes a while for even the latest CPUs to calculate, so just whop it on to do that and then watch the CPU temps and see if its stable

*EDIT* - link to superpi download http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=36

Its Pi = 3.1415..... something or other. (I have a maths prelim on Monday, Ive been swotting up :D )

yea theyre all talkin about stress tests... whatever, get somethin like superpi or prime95, either will work fine.

if it overheats, yes then you need more cooling. personally, my preference if not over 40c idle. i spent a good $75 on cooling though, of course i probably more than doubled my cpu life according to oc 101
