OCING my 4000+, please "walk" me through it.

So yeah, 2.1GHz just IS NOT FAST ENOUGH >_<!

At 2.21GHz, my PCW rating was 3258(well, I had a 2 dif programs running, so that didn't help). Now, at 2.25, with everything closed, its up to 3410. Here is what I have done so far:

OCed from: 2.1GHz
Oced to: 2.25GHz
Goal: 2.3GHz
Bumped voltage from: 1.3V
Bumped voltage to: 1.325V

The thing about the voltage is that It is currently @ 1.325, but PCW shows 1.36. Is this bad? And what kind of votage is the max I can do, without risking damaging my CPU.

My idle temps are about 30-31 *C. Load temps are about 44-45 *C. What is the unsafe point of my temps? What temps can I go to without risking shoretening the life of my cpu. The reason I'm so worried about that is that if my CPU dies on me, I will not have a computer for a while. I have $30 saved up RIGHT NOW, but i don't actaully have the money, I need to wait for the rebates from my last purchase to come in.

Help is GREATLY appreciated.

What problems are you having with overclocking?

Increase the FSB so you get to your goal. If it's not working then you will have to slightly increase the voltage. The V that your program is showing probably core voltage so don't worry about it.

Your CPU is cool at full loads, and max is 70 'C. You Can probably even overclock it to 2.4.'

Don't worry your CPU will not mess up or anything. If it gets too hot your pc will just shut down to prevent any damage. Although if you have a big overclock on your CPU (i mean big) it will reduce the life span.

Well, i had acrash at 2.7, but i think it was the voltage...so 50 *C would probably be max. what is the max voltage change?

thanks

there is no max

there is just temps and stabily of the overclock

Although if you have a high overlock, voltage or temps might not be the only reasons. For example ram timings may be causing it.

Try 1.35 V and go 2.4 GHZ if not, try 2.35 GHZ

also download a cpu stress test called orthos which will help you see if your cpu is stable

Ok. However, I would rather OC in increments, you know, to be safe. Some one said that giving my CPU too much voltage could fry it. What would to much be?

really appreciate it!

Don't worry about increasing FSB in large amounts. If it's too much then your pc will not start and you just have to adjust some things in the BIOS to fix it.

You're always supposed to increase V by 1 setting at a time , example from 1.4 to 1.425, not from 1.4 to 1.45 etc.

I said 2.4 or 2.35, because you got 125 MHZ from increasing voltage by one. If you increase it by one more I bet you can do the same, or even more. If you really don't want to jump, then try 2.3 GHZ with 1.35 V. It should work. After try 2.325. Then 2.350. Then 2.375. Then 2.4.

OK, so I run orthos @ 2.3GHz, 6 min it crashes. Voltage problem? I saw that it ws only at 47.5 *C. I ran again at 2.9GHz, 30 min later, it crashed. I but it down for now, because im not doing gaming, when I have more time I will keep trying to OC. So right now, my voltage = 1.325. Your saying it WILL be absolutley safe to set it tp 1.35V, right? I'll probably be running more tests tomorrow. Thanks again.

i dont understand

did you try with 1.35 V?

it is probably crashing from not enough voltage.

Trust me, raising voltage by one setting will not mess anything up. It will slightly raise temps and raising voltage by 0.05 is small.

OK, i will try it with 1.35 @2.3GHz. What do you think would prove to be a stable time. Like for how long? I would think at least 30min? What i'll probably do is just have it run for an hour, then I think it should be good. Thanks.

Well I use prime95 and most the time if its stable for 30 mins it seems to stay that way.

I would say a hour as a minimum though....most run it for 7-8 hours however but I never saw the point and to this day never had issues (no random bsod etc) just doing 1 hour tests. Most failures tend to happen within 15 mins when I OC this Q6600.

I think an hour should be good

You can probably reach 2.325 though, or 2.35 with no problems at 1.35 V so I reccomend trying that

edit:

prime95 needs longer to test than orthos

I ran Orthos@ 2.29GHz hour 1:00:04 hours. No errors. Temps were as high as 51 *C at 100% load. I do not want to get any higher then that, and I may even bring it down to 2.28 to stay under 50 *C. Stock cooler just aint good enough :P

The max temp for your cpu is 70'C. Not to mention that your cpu is working at 100% load, where in games or programs it's much less. Also lowering your speed down to 2.28 won't really lower any temps.

Ill see what I'll do. I play crysis, and that's pretty demanding. Thanks for all your help guys. Mainly bart though :P

Tommy, i know how to maitain my comp lol...
