OCZ pulls through again <3

I bought 600W OCZ power supply earlier this year. It was defective, so two
months in I had it replaced. The warehouse sent me a 700W as a
replacement. About five months in, this replacement blew up on me. So
earlier this month, I sent it to the warehouse. They were out of stock, so
instead of sending a StealthXStreme 700W, they sent me a ModXStreme
700W. I am one happy camper :)

If you are getting a PSU, definitely go with a Modular. Being able to lose
the not-needed cables is so ballin'. And the OCZ MXS 700W is whisper
quiet.

Some feedback on the OCZ MXS 700W:

It was sort-of a struggle to set it up. The SATA plugs were upside down,
because my PSU is mounted at the bottom, and I guess these cables were
intended for a PSU that is top-mounted. So I had difficulty getting that
connected.

And there is a cable that I can't remove -- it's an 8 plug (2 pins x 4 pins).
I have no idea what it's for. There was the motherboard power cable, and
CPU power cable -- clearly, all computers will use those, so those cannot
be removed. But I don't know what this 8 plug is meant for -- and I'm
surprised it's not an optional cable. So I had to tie-clip it and leave it lying
around doing nothing. Sort-of disappointed, because it ruins the point of
having my modular PSU lol. Any ideas?

Also, I'm surprised how short the cables are. There's no way I could use
this PSU for a case that has cable management. They would never reach.
Do you have to buy special PSU that has long cables if you want to hide
cables in the back?

That was a nice upgrade.

I´m sure you could just buy the longer versions of those cables you want to hide.

I have two 6+2 plugs on my power supply, and they're for PCI-E graphics cards.

i agree modular is the way to go, i got an enermax modular psu, helps keep your case tidy.

however, wow on three PSUs in a year! i know ocz has a good reputation, but lately they've been crap. the last two kits of ram i bought from them came with a defective stick. such a waste of time sending stuff back...

I tried to stick it in my graphics card. It didn't want to go in. I rotated
it and tried from all directions, but no go.

It's not a 6+2, it's a full 8, and the 2 don't separate.

The good news is -- it's really easy to RMA with them. The last time
they didn't even ask for my receipt. And usually, from the day I send
my package, it takes only a week to get a shipment back from them.

I have a ModXStream 700W and I have a 4 pin power extension just hanging up there... it's kinda annoying, sorta sitting there saying "You'll never get rid of me muahaha".

That 8pin is the cpu power connector....Most motherboards these days use an 8pin vs 4pin cpu power connector. Are you sure it separates into two four pins? If so They may be updating it to a 4+4pin and then removing the single 4pin connector maybe...

I think the reason they didn't ask for a receipt was because it was a common problem and they're tired of arguing with customers :p

Hahahaha, yep. That's what mines is saying too. But I have the 8-pin just
hanging there, instead of the 4-pin.

That 8pin is the cpu power connector....Most motherboards these days use an 8pin vs 4pin cpu power connector.

I thought it would be something like that. That must be the LGA1366
motherboards, right?

I just checked out the details of the MXS 700W on the OCZ website.
Yep, it says:

500W - 700W Connectors:

  • 1 x 20/24-pin ATX
  • 1 x 8-pin CPU
  • 1 x 4-pin CPU
Modular Connectors:

  • 1 x 6-pin PCI-E
  • 1 x 6+2-pin PCI-E
  • 4 x Peripheral
  • 2 x Floppy
  • 6 x SATA

Are you sure it separates into two four pins? If so They may be updating it to a 4+4pin and then removing the single 4pin connector maybe...

No, it doesn't separate.

There is one 4-pin cable, and one 8-pin cable.

I think the reason they didn't ask for a receipt was because it was a common problem and they're tired of arguing with customers :p

LOL, that makes sense too.

But I have two headsets from logitech. One was $20, the other one was
$60. And both crapped out on me in the same month. And when I wanted
to RMA them with logitech, they requested I send them a jpeg of my
receipt. And I don't have a scanner, so I had no way of doing it.

It's been like three months since they asked for my receipt, and I still
didn't get around to it.

But their whole series of logitech clearchat headsets crapped out. The
store is now selling a bunch of refurbed ones for $10, so I just picked up
one of those. But it's killing my ears. The headset cuts into the ear of my
skin. What a piece of shit. I need to get my $60-ones replaced.

I dunno my power supply is modular.

Amazing what some wire nuts, electric tape, and some snippers can do. Best part is I can reconnect them whenever I want.

My way is so much cheaper ^-^ Modular is almost always $40-$50 more.

See, thats what confused me, in your original post i thought you said it separated. And actually, pretty much any high end motherboard and most midrange boards are running 8pins these days. Alot of 775 boards were 8pin, ALL 1156 and nehalem boards are 8pin and some are even dual 8pin, and many of the decent AM3 boards are 8pin.

And there is a cable that I can't remove -- it's an 8 plug (2 pins x 4 pins).
Thats what confused me

I upgraded to a modular not long ago and the cables were really short. I had an old OCZ 520W and the cables were more than long enough to route behind the motherboard tray. I wonder if all modular supplies have short cables for a reason?

Thats what confused me

1. I meant -- the shape is 2 columns x 4 rows, but it is one solid piece.

2. I have Asus P5QL for Intel 775. And it's just a 4-pin CPU.

3. I checked recently -- the OCZ SXS 700W and OCZ MXS 700W were the
same price -- around $100 Cnd. Except I think the modular had a $20
mail-in-rebate as well.

4. My OCZ SXS 700W had longer cables than this modular.

5. I think if you have a case with cable management, you'll have to get
a higher-end power supply. Because you won't be able to replace the
3 non-removable cables. You would have to use some sort of extensions.
