Odd boot error...Please help!

"Reboot and select proper boot device, or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key"

I bought a new HDD (seagate 500g) but I can't get past this error, and I can't boot from CD either. The drive has no OS on it, so I'm trying to install windows 7. The weird part is the bios recognizes both my dvd drive and HDD. I changed the settings in bios to make sure it's pointing to my dvd drive first, and I have the CD in the drive but it never gives me an option to boot from CD. I also changed DVD drives and nothing happens...I still get the same error message. I'm running out of options. What do you guys think the problem is?

So:
Removed battery from mobo to reset bios
Switched DVD drives
checked boot order
Windows 7 cd works on other computer
Switched HDD's
Changed cables
Plugged into different sata cables


BTW, Both DVD drive and HDD are SATA. The dvd drives work on a different computer. The motherboard is a Biostar tf720. Maybe something with the sata controller, or do I need to flash the BIOS or try to run the HDD cd from boot? I'm exhausted from troubleshooting and just would like to know if anyone has had this trouble before. Thanks!

Just to clarify are you talking about setting it to AHCI? or something different
 
It should be set to compatibility mode or IDE. I checked your board, it looks like it only has 1 sata controller on it, so that shouldn't be a problem
 
4 orange plugs, 2 red (6 total sata plugs)

Only reason I mention this is because i'm not 100% positive on the model, I know it's a tf something by biostar so just clarifying. I will let you know for sure when I get off.
 
Ok, that makes sense. Make sure you only plug the drives into the orange plugs as the 2 red plugs don't support IDE mode, only raid and ahci. So maybe you have them plugged into the red ports?
 
Nope, everything was plugged into the orange. so get this...

I'm about to hulk smash my ****ing computer.

I FINALLY got it to boot, I flashed my bios and now I get this error

"The power of the CPU exceeds 95w"

I know what this error means, but what blows my MIND IS THAT IT'S WORKED FINE FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS!!!!!!
I update the bios, FROM THE COMPUTER and then after it restarts it gets this message. Is there a way I can go back to the old BIOS? I'm guessing they put this failsafe in the new bios settings so the beefier processors dont melt the mobo. I'm further back than where I started, and I could use a tall glass of whiskey right about now.

What I did was connect to a different HDD with vista on it. It actually started (without video drivers and such) but I was able to get online to download the new bios. Now that I can't even get it to start, is there anyway to get the old bios back? I backed it up using the bios tool but that's in windows. There is no default in the bios settings...
 
If you backed up the old bios in windows, then you should be able to slave the drive to another system and copy that file to a usb flash drive and then try reflashing it. Do you still have the owners manual for the board? Look on page 29 where it says bios flasher to know how to do it.

Ok I'm at work so i'll have to do this after I get off again. Last night I formatted a flash drive to boot as a dos disk and put the flash utility on there as well as the bios. I couldn't get them to boot though. I think the problem may of been i put them in a folder on the drive, do you think that's where I went wrong?

I put it in E:\Bios instead of E:\

Should I just install it to the root directory of the flash drive?

In my bios, I went to HDD's and made the flash drive the 1 slot (It showed 3 options, the flash drive and 2 HDD's I have connected). Then I went to boot options and went in this order -> Flash drive -> CD drive -> floppy

Look good so far?
 
You might have to just put the file on the flash drive and not in a folder. Or you have to do this from a floppy if you have one.
 
I finally got the bios back to the original version. Turns out it was showing POST, but as soon as I chose an option other than to go to the BIOS the 95w error would pop up. So basically I needed another processor or just to buy a new mobo to fix this...


After hours of searching, I realized I had an old AM2 proc! I installed it, was able to flash the bios to the version right before they implemented the lockout.

I also fixed my HDD issue, but i'm still having one small problem. I can boot from vista, but not my windows 7 DVD (64 bit). I would just do an upgrade, but my vista is 32 bit and you can't upgrade to 64 without doing a full install :(. Any reason why my DVD player isn't recognizing win 7? It's an older reader, but it reads vista fine... Ideas?

So it reads the vista install dvd just fine but not the windows 7 dvd? Possible that windows 7 dvd is damaged or not bootable, or just flaky drive and needs to be replaced.
 
Ah well the win7 disk is burned...but I have used it before from boot and it worked fine. It also reads fine once I installed vista, I just can't get it to boot from CD.

I know what the main point to this is going to be, "buy a legitimate disk". I had one, and I still have my validation key. I lost the original disk so I got the install files from online. So without buying another copy/waiting for microsoft to send me another disk, is there any way I can get this work? Might need to try another drive and see what happens I guess...
