Odd problem with my setup...

I'm having a very strange problem with my computer, and i cant narrow down where the problem is coming from.

Whenever i go to watch a movie or listen to music, my computer crashes and restarts. It doesnt matter if im using DivX, WMP, iTunes, integrated media players on websites, or any other player... it just crashes.

I put my CPU back down to 3Ghz, thinking that it was because of my overclock, and it still didnt work. I reset the CMOS via the jumper, still nothing. I reformated my comp, still nothing (i even installed an older version of windows). Re-installed video drivers, nothing. And i also put my video card speeds back to stock, and again nothing.

So i've tried everything possible, but i dont know what the problem is. My temps are 20-25C Idle for the CPU, and 40-45C idle for the video card, so its not the temps. And i can play games fine (for the most part).

maybe a audio codec that had complications when being installed?
Maybe... But i would think re-installing windows would have fixed that, unless the file on the CD is corrupt.

i see you decided to get a Pentium D after all
Yes, and regretting it :P

Im actually selling it on ebay and im just going to buy a P4 for around $100-$130. Since dual-cores have lots of problems with games.

a 930? problems with games? my dads 820 doesn't...
u just need to set the core affinity thing for the game to use 1 core...

I know, i had to do that with NFSMW. But when i try to do that in steam games, the comp crashes :(

Since i dont have any dual-core games, and im kinda just using this until conroe, there really isnt much reason for me to get a dual-core. Not to mention i dont have any multi-threaded games.

@ my original post, im going to try installing XP Home and see if that makes a difference.

iiii c...

is the Intel 995X chipset boards supposed to have a bios update for the conroe?
dont know... i should look into that, it may be one less thing i need to buy;)

Im actually thinking that it may have been a bug with Windows XP and dual-cores. Since i never really used Windows Update, im updating it now and i'll post back and tell you if it made a difference or not.

hmm... this weird, cus my dad has absolutly NO problems with his PD820... even in videos and gaming... even b4 he windows updated...

actually now that i come to think of it he did have a problem with watching movies and stuff... but it was all good when he got Windows Media Encoder 9 Series...
yea, that might help!!!!! get it here

I have Media Encoder 9, i needed it to run PCMark.

I havent tried memtest, but i will.

And i tried getting all the updates, but when i restarted it came up with a blue screen that said some file had a corrupt image. :(

wow, omega, u strike me as the type to have hardrives laying around...
Well I have about 20 here....hey omega just drive down to da 'burgh today, and I'll give you one...lol :D

I doubt that a different hard drive would do anything

I ran MemTest, it got to 700% without errors (couple hours long). I dont really feel like buying another hard drive, lol.
