My computer broke and I had to have certain parts changed, the thing is,the repairman put an oem dvd drive in my machine, brand new.The question is;I thought oem items where supposedly for brand new machines only? Is this legal?
OEM equipment is intended for OEM use, but pieces often find their way around the supply chain. Many online retailers sell OEM equipment that have been overstocked or discontinued; the practice is legal.
I've never had a problem w/ an OEM drive. Actually sometimes it benefits you ... 1) they can be a bit cheaper than retail versions 2) you don't get the extra crap that comes in retail boxes. For instance TDK retail drives bundle Roxio software .. I don't need that crap
The drives are also IDENTICAL to the packaged versions. They usually come in a simple plastic bag. I have basically assembled my PC with OEM components. As has been already mentioned, they are cheaper, avoid the usual fuss (cheap cables+unnecessary software) and offer the same end result. So go the platinum way, go the OEM way .
