OEM XP on another computer

Well, not really. But most of it is a new computer. I am going to upgrade my dell into a new case. I will be buying a new mobo, PSU, case, and CPU cooler (see thread "final buy" in Desktop forum) so I will need to reinstall XP due to the new mobo, right?

However, the XP I have is an OEM. I only have the reinstallation CD without a key. Is it possible to reinstall the same XP version using the same key? Or do I need to rebuy it?

Well

I am sure that you can use the same copy and the same serial as long as it stays installed on only one PC, even though it's am OEM ;)

JAN :D

But I've heard that Dell and other OEM's put things in the mobo that identifies it as a dell, and make it so the XP that comes with dells can only go with dell mobos. True?

You can't use the oem cd that dell gave you to install xp on a different motherboard. The cd looks for specific id string from the motherboard to determine if its a dell system. Since it won't be, it won't install. You will have to buy another copy of XP.

That is almost true. I would say try it and give Dell a call to activate it. I know that with my Win XP Pro copy that it worked without a hitch after I called to have it activated. I explained everything to microsoft and they gave me a new product ID number.
