Office database solution ...

Ok, heres the slim and short of it. I'm helping start a land development firm, and we are looking to streamline our contact management system with something that is a little more friendly and specific to our needs. FYI our current system is a word template  . I keep trying to suggest bigger and better, but I honestly don't know where to start.
This is what I know I want:
- database, preferably server-side, so that once our office is up and running, we can access from the road or the office.
- effective UI, not unlike a card catalogue or rolodex card.
- customizable fields. This is a MUST. We need to be able to enter the information we need, not a preset.
- simple maintainence/upkeep. I can learn, but the other office members' knowledge of anything technical is relatively limited. If someone needs to go in and change the field names or categories, they should be able to with minimal difficulty.

That being said, is a combination of my wants a possibility? If so, where do I find it? If not, how close can I get?

One question, many solutions !!

there are many solutions to this, it all depends what YOU are prepared to do!

if you are a computer programmer you could create an application to access a SQL based database backend, and you could easily access your data on the move if you create a web front end too.

if you are just a normal computer user, you would have to use an application like Access and design your own database using that, and you would have to sort out remote working yourself.

if you cannot afford MS access 2007 you could use the FREE openoffice base alternative, (believe me openoffice is not good enough eg, it is really slow, kills of your computer, and does not have enough features!!)
