Oh SnAp! my computer broke

Well, my computer was running fine until one fine after noon while i was playing a game it just randomly shut off, i was thinking nothing of it but it happened again some time later, and then it kept happening more and more often. Now after about a month of it just randomly shutting off while playing games it shut off during the night while just sitting there and the computer wont start up any more :(.

I replaced the power supply with an older, but still working, one and it still did not start up, maybe because i hooked it up wrong but i doubt it considering i built the computer myself and took several computer classes that taught me how to build them lol.

oh ya, with the power supply that was in there when it broke when i pushed the button the fans would not even spin, then i put in the other one and the fans spun for like a second then shut off, and now they don't spin at all again.

So what could be the problem, it most likely aint the power suppy.

any help appriciated, i know my way around a computer so i should understand what you are saying :P.

thanks
justin

It sounds to me like it would be either your motherboard or your PSU. If you have ascertained that it is not your PSU, then it should be your motherboard.

Did you get any blue screens? Or any other messages before it shut down?

Heat will cause that problem, but in your case it does not sound like it.

What are the components in your system? Including the old PSU, motherboard, CPU and such.

There was no blue screen it just shut off.

components
cpu amd athlon 3400 socket 939 (yes a 3400 socket 939)
2x1024gb of corsair xms3200 ram, 3.3.3.8 timing
xfx 6600gt 126 mb agp gpu
msi k8t neo 2 motherboard
the psu in it atm is the one that came with the case a 420watt raidmax
the one that was in it when it broke was a ultra xconnect 500watt psu.

as you can see it is a pritty old computer, had it for like 3-4 years, i forget lol.

Just sitting here trying to guess what's wrong, well... I would say the motherboard is toast.

Try changing out the ram 1 stick at a time. Just pull one and try it, if it does not work, replace that first stick and remove the other one.

Otherwise?

Im pritty set on it being the motherboard, i was thinking psu at first but sense i tried one that i knew worked and it still didn't work i thought motherboard. What else would make the computer not even turn on the fans right?

Guess im out to find a new mobo and processor considering i have a factory discontinued bs processor that runs 800 ht instead of 1000 ht which is what 99% of all socket 939 motherboards support. Sense im getting new ones of those i might as well get a new gpu also considering finding a agp motherboard is a choar in itself.

Make sure it's not shorting, and then I'd say start off with the basic components to test, then go from there. Probably the mobo is fried.. how? No idea.. overheating...

I had this problem on my new asus p5k.. turned on for 2 secs fans spun up, then shut down.. I reset the cmos and everything was alright....
