Ok I Am Going To Try Building My Own

I orderd the ones I had picked out. But I will return those, not a problem. I would like to do this right the first time.

Okay. Here's something I missed. You ordered 4GB of RAM. If you plan to run XP, you need to run the 64 bit version in order to use the full amount of RAM. The 32 bit version will see, at the most, 3.25GB.

Did you order the parts from Newegg? If yes, cancel the order on the RAM and get 2GB. Since it's Saturday, you probably still have the option to cancel (if your orders' haven't shipped yet). Try to cancel the motherboard and PSU and get the components I recommended.

If you can't cancel, it would still be a pretty good build. Your only other option is returning the parts. Newegg will charge you a 15% restocking fee, plus, you have to ship the items back on your own penny. That wouldn't be worth it so I would just keep everything.

Did you get that email i sent you when all this started??? Also what is wrong with the mother board w/the set up i have picked out? thank you, Troy

No. It may have landed in my spam box. You can try again if you'd like. :)

The only problem is the lack of PCI-E 2.0 support on the motherboard. That's it, though. I think the X38 chipset is better, but, the motherboard you've picked out is okay.

What about the 64bit version of XP. I am kinda lost on this. Would it be better to load the 64 bit version and use the extra ram. I would think that would be better then losing almost 1G of memory. I am try to figure this stuff out. Also the extra samsung HD. How do I choose that for downloading stuff. I am really sorry for all the questions but I really am trying to get this stuff

I'd go with the 32 bit version of XP with 2GB. You really don't need more than that. I've read that the 64 bit version of XP is really bad. Microsoft will allow you to try it out for free. Click here to order the download. You'll need a blank CD and a program like ImgBurn to burn the OS to a disk.

With the Samsung, all you need to do is install the hard drive and format the disk. After you build your PC, we'll give you instructions on how to do that. You can even format the disk before you install Windows with the installation disk.

OK but I don't need the money so having 4GB will still be better even though at the most I will only be using 1.25 of the second stick of ram correct?

I tell you what, the more I think I am learning the more I feel like I am going back wards. Some guy today told me going with two WD 10,000rpm hard drives raided together would be the way to go??? I swear I am taking one step forward two steps back.

Nah, you don't "need" it. Did he offer a good explanation as to why it's necessary?

Mep916, no reason other then to confuse me:confused:

OK I am done with picking my parts , I wanted to thank you all for your help. I will be back when it comes time for using my second HD a samsung the one you suggested mep. ok thank you very much, Troy

You could build something fairly nasty with that price range. newegg.com is where you will find everything. I'd be willing to bet you could build a pc for less than $1k that would be more than enough for your needs. Just have to shop around.
