Ok, my budget is around £1000 ($1833). Someone please check these provisional specs.

Been a couple of years since I built a PC and am thus a bit ignorant of current technology. Anyway, I would like to build a solid gaming PC that is also a capable image-editing system etc. (I am a graphic designer).

CASE: NZXT Trinity Tower 400W Case w/ Side-panel Window (BLACK Color)
CPU: (939-pin) AMD Athlon™64 X2 3800+ Dual-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology (Am tempted by the x2 4200 though.)
FAN: AMD ATHLON64 CERTIFIED CPU FAN & HEATSINK + 3 EXTRA CASE FANS
HDD: 200GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 8M Cache 7200RPM Hard Drive
MOTHERBOARD: (Sckt939)ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe nForce4 SLI Chipset SATA RAID Dual PCIE MB w/Gb-LAN,USB2.0,IEEE-1394,&7.1Audio
MEMORY: 2048 MB (1GBx2) PC3200 400MHz Dual Channel DDR MEMORY (Corsair Value Select or Major Brand)
POWERSUPPLY: NZXT PF-500 500Watt Power Supply
SOUND: HIGH DEFINITION ON-BOARD 7.1 AUDIO
VIDEO: NEW !!! NVIDIA Geforce 7600 GS 512MB PCI Express x16 Video Card

I think those components ended up coming out at about £1100 on www.cyberpower.co.uk.

Anyway, comments would be welcome. Would like to know how much cheaper buying individual components would be too.

Cheers, fellas. If I had to choose between a better processor or a better gfx card, which would you recommend I go for?

I reccommend going for the better graphics card.

I disagree, it is much easier to upgrade a graphics card than a CPU. I would get the better CPU now, or wait for better ones to come out. Then upgrade the GPU later down the road.

I know nothing about them.

Edit: Just checked them out, so they support DDR2, how significant is that?

It really isn't significant, but you want AM2 just because it will become obsolete considerably after skt939 will.

Is there really that big of a difference between UK prices and US prices? Cause I configured a system with 1.5kUSD that would kill the system you configured, and that's only about £800

Also, if he can't go for the for a higher end video card like the 7900gt then I would try to spring for a 7600gt.

Got no idea. That system was configured on a site that sells whole systems. I need to check how much it'd be if I were to buy components.

There is quite a bit of difference in price. I buy all my components in America 'cause its so much cheaper! :D

Wow, very good price. Perhaps you should consider that auction...

I notice that it's customisable. Any parts you can see that I could change for the better without a big price jump?

from what i know (which isnt a whole lot so i could be wrong) graphics cards go down in price very quickly especially when compared to the speed that processors go down, so get a good processor now, and a little worse grphx card later, besides, they are way easier to upgrade, a mobo is less compatible with future processors than future graphics cards

ok well your set-up looks great but a bit pricey for what u are getting i would recommend upgrading your processor be4 your great gfx card. As for where to buy your parts i have had amazing service with www.newegg.com ,they deliver fast and always have great deals!!!
~hope this info helped ya!~
