I have Windows XP installed on my desktop and Windows 7 installed on my sorta-newish laptop. I've always thought that Windows 7 was free since it came with the new laptops you buy so i wanted to install Windows 7 on my desktop computer. Apparently I can't just install a newer version but instead I have to buy Windows 7 and there seems to be different versions of it. Can someone tell me how this all works? Do i have to buy the 2010 Microsoft Office too? Sorry about all this guys, I'm really helpless with these things :(

1: The license for Windows that comes on computers CANNOT be transferred. It is for that computer, and that computer alone. Windows was not free, but rather included in the price of the computer you purchased.

2: If you wish to install Windows 7 on a computer, you must purchase a license for it. Home Premium is normally fine for general users. You can normally purchase Windows 7 on Newegg for $89.

3: Microsoft Office is not part of Windows. It is a separate package you need to purchase. Last I looked two weeks ago, Newegg had a keycard for a Microsoft Office 2010 Home & Student (Includes Word, Excel, and Powerpoint) for $100.

all of this information is right on point.

It might be worth mentioning that (I think) the only version of Win 7 now available for retail purchase is the OEM version which comes with just the CD and key, and there are some specific restrictions on how that is used.

If your trying to get away from XP them I would consider a Linux operating system like Ubuntu, it's free and depending on what version of office you run libre office which comes with Ubuntu will probably be better anyway.

Otherwise you will have to just shell out the money for window 7 which you can still get consumer version on amazon but they are quiet pricy.
