Okay one BIG question *Final Thread*

k I know I've started 3 threads.
I'm sorry.
But there all related to somewhat different problems and this will end them all.

This is the PC:
http://gateway.com/home/products/ret/ret_gt5252.shtml
I KNOW ITS NOT CUSTOM OR AMAZING.
: P

But I'm wondering if I upgrade the graphics card to a 512 or higher.

Will this computer be fine for a year.
Will I be able to upgrade to 800mhz Ram if I want to with that motherboard?

I'm getting a new PC in a year.
So again.
If I upgrade the video card.
Can I still upgrade the Ram later?
and will this be good for games for a year.

The largest amount of memory seen on video cards is 512mb at the current time unless you plan to spend thousands on an engineering model that was custom designed. For most systems including gaming a good 256 to 512mb model is all that is ever needed. On a Gateway? Don't waste the cash! Wait for the overview on all hardwares when ready for a new build.

what are you talking about

Theres are definitely 1gb video cards and I'm getting a 640.
Go to tiger direct.
There only like 500.

And second off.
how is there anything wrong with this machine?
Honestly if I have 800 in gift cards to best buy.

I'm asking if this machine CAN play games for a year.
if I upgrade the Video card.
and if I CAN upgrade the Ram to 800mhz if I want.

Just reply to what I ask please.
I dont mean to seem rude.
But for a pre-build BRAND NAME machine.
Thats a good deal.

Please just answer my questions.

OK, first off, don't look for "512 or higher" video cards. I can find you a 512MB video card for like $30 that won't do squat. If you want something, do a little research and find what chip sets are decent out there.

Now then, that computer has a PCI-Express 16x slot, so you're pretty much open to any video card avaliable. Your only limitation might be size(some require two slots but the computer only has room for one) and a weak power supply.

What exactly are you wanting to do with such a powerful video card? A computer like that can probably use say an 8800GTS, but you'd almost certainlly need another power supply and possibly another case.

dude, thats a great system. you're right on the vid cards. they come with up to 1 gig of vram. I would reccomend getting it and upgrading the card. Go for it!:)

Thank you.
And I realize I'd have to upgrade the power supply.
I just want to leave my options open and make sure it would work.

But will 800mhz Ram work with that system?
Yes as long as its the same type.? (ddr2 etc?)

There are FireGL models that are great for graphics designers and CAD! But those also come at a higher price and are not usually recommended for gaming. http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=321355&prodlist=ovsubmit Nothing like spending a little over $1,500 there if you are anxious.

You don't need to spend tremendous amount to get into a good card for gaming. How about $2,399.99 for a PNY model? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814133189 Newegg can save you a little more usually on some other models like the EVGA model seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130023 if you are able to find a model like this one at Best Buy.

The main problem is that they generally run with slower memory clocks then 256mb or 512mb gaming model cards. The system itself is capable of running just any game out once you have a good card to run. But $500 regardless is a little overkill for the temporary use when you get a 256mb card that will spin circles around some of these higher cost models.

The answer to that is a simple look at the specifications seen at the link you first posted.

"Memory
2048MB dual-channel DDR2 (2 x 1024MB), 533Mhz (PC4200),
Expandable to 4GB"

That's the memory that it supports.

I know.
But will it suppoer 800mhz.
As long as its the same type.

It would show right off it ran DDR2 800 memory. The information there came right from the specifications seen. If it stated 800 then it would most likely also run 533 and 667mhz memory like seen on most boards. But that's the fastest memory supported there.
