Old C: drive data retrieval

I have a friend whose mobo and processor are fried. He had a lot of data on his hard drive that he'd like to get back.

Is it possible to connect that hard drive to one of my secondary IDE ports and retrieve the data? Will the install of XP on his drive prevent my C: drive from booting? Would I need to go to safe mode to do this, or am I scr*wed from the start? Any ideas will be a big help.

Change the jumper setting of his HD to slave, and then plug it in to your pc. If the HD is not fried, it will be fine.
